I don't remember a large portion of my life before I was 18 (and I'm 22 now) - and yet some things I remember with all but absolute clarity. Some things I only just remembered relatively recently that happened during that time.

nope. not periods in my life. but people. who remember me, from i know not where, nor how nor when. most being from one or more of my hobby interests. sometimes they turn out to be relatives or one time closer acquaintances. i'm always afraid i might be offending them by not remembering who they are, but i just have a really rotten memory for people.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

I have a Reader's Digest condensed version memory of my life. I remember important things, like getting married, having kids, getting divorced - but the day to day stuff sort of gets mashed together into an amorphous memory blob.

So, I can remember what happened, but I can't remember it happening, per se.

I'll give you an example.

When I was in middle school, I know I had a teacher who was a complete and total bitch, and I remember her name. I have a short summary of offenses that she committed against me in memory - in list form. However, I don't remember the offenses actually occurring, I can't picture them, and I don't remember what she looked like, and I don't even remember what the classroom looked like. I just have a summary list.

I have many many more examples, but that's just one that's relatively neutral and comes to mind.

Is this normal? Does it happen to anyone else?

There's a lot that's simply buried in my mind. Yet ever once in a while something like a smell, song, feeling, name, occasion, place triggers a memory and they come back.

I believe that's how our brains are supposed to work.

Just imagine you could remember every single word of every single conversation you've ever had. That'd drive you crazy!

I remember lots of little things from my early days, but I can't remember things people told me to do 5 minutes ago. I forget to finish my homework sometimes, but remember my 2nd grade birthday at the tractor place where my dad used to work and we raced down a sandy hill and got to ride in a truck, and me nad Austin traded our toy cars...

See?

yes, certainly. quite large parts of my life... in fact, most of my childhood up to the age of about 13, probably. i remember that things happened, i remember what happened, but i can barely remember any details other than that which other people have since told ("reminded") me, or photos/videos.

eg. i know that i got cap-guns for christmas when i was 11. we went to the beach on boxing day to play with them, and my dad and i had a great time playing with them. its a happy memory... except that i can't remember it. i know that it happened, but all i have to go on is what my parents have said since, and the video they took. in comparison, i remember a lot of other (important or happy/sad) things in much more detail, usually like a bunch of photos, or stills from a movie, can remember what people said (ish), imagine the the place in 3D in my head, remember what it smelled like, remember emotions felt at the time, etc, etc

its quite often pretty disturbing, and some of it i wish i could remember (like that one) :(

i also can't remember much of my 2 years at uni, though that's for different reasons :p

edit: sometimes i worry that in another 10-15 years, i won't be able to remember now either.

I think the brain has a tendency to just categorize things into list when the pertinent memory is not really useful anymore. Does it really matter what your middle school teacher looked like? Does it matter what classroom you were in? Does it matter remembering the pictures on the walls during whatever happened?

Probably not. However, I think your mind still wants to keep a working memory file, so it compresses the data into "just the facts", so to speak.

That's my hypothesis.
