The only reason I'm not completely dreading the current conservatives getting in is that, with the current party leadership, I can at least be reasonably certain that they won't undermine one of the few really good things Labour did in the last 10 years - ie gay rights. So no, returning to older time social policies is not only a bad thing, it's unlikely to happen.

When the Tories get in, we'll see support for independence in Scotland go up.

Yea that's what I'm worried about. A lot of scots don't feel British at all and are all for independence. Its a bit sad really. But if you confront them the main reason for wanting independance is a dislike of the English and resentment from the past. They claim they are getting a raw deal.

But I say they get free prescriptions, nouition fees, cheaper universities as a whole and a lot more per head in education than us English.

I hope we make a real push to justify the union instead of just sitting on our asses and pretending its not going to be a problem. If the scots are convinced independance is the better way forward then we're going to lose them.

As a scot Brown could have done more to firm up things in the north.

That's not a good thing.

I agree, it'd probably cause oppression and not just for those it affects directly, but also for those that stand up for equality whether they believe in the cause or not.

But I know it wouldn't happen, unless it was some V for Vendetta scenerio.

Thus leaves most of our army, a sizeable chunk of our economy and national identity.

I doubt our taxes would be decreased they would more likely increase if Scotland left.

The Lib Dems seem to be one of the few parties admitting things need to be cut back across the board. We shouldn't spend beyond our means. So I ideally would like to see them voted in. Maybe then council tax can be reduced to reasonable levels.

What's wrong with not feeling British and wanting independence? Why shouldn't they be allowed to go for independence?

I'll be the first to say that nationalist sentiments don't seem to be a particularly good reason for claiming independence. But then nationalist sentiments don't seem a particularly good reason for opposing it either.

No. No-one would lose English or Scottish national identity just because the 2 are no longer unified.

:eyebrow: You've not been on NSG long have you? Expect a bit of off-topic wandering in amongst the discussion.

But if you want a predicition, I'll repeat what I already said, Conservatives win big in England, nabbing a lot of seats off Labour, SNP and possibly Lib Dems make gains in Scotland, similar with Plaid in Wales. Lib Dems gain a few seats from Labour in urban areas but don't do too well in more traditional Conservative territory - probably a decent gain, maybe break 100. Conservatives form government with Cameron as PM, but only have a relatively slim majority due to nationalist party wins. Unfortunately the opposition will as such be divided and thus less effective.
