Postby Burchadinger » Fri Jul 24, 2009 2:27 am

So the election is next year. Who will win or who do you want to win?

Umm... you do know in the UK we vote for parties not specific people?

I'd argue you may want to redo the poll somewhat - although of course victories by the SNP and DUP will have regional impact but are not mutually exclusive with victories by one of the three major parties generally (and if you're going with regional politics, I'd add in Plaid Cymru else the welsh may feel left out).

But generally, I expect a Conservative victory, though probably not by 1997 New Labour levels. I think Labour will hang on to quite a few seats, but I'm hoping that the Lib Dems will see an increase so that they become an effective opposition. I think SNP will do very well but only because no one in Scotland wants to vote Tory and like the rest of the country they hate Labour currently. I don't know enough about Welsh or N Irish politics to comment there, but again I expect in Wales to see Plaid gains at the expense of Labour.

That's the shittest poll I have ever seen. We vote for parties, and Alex Salmond's party couldn't win an election, because they only contest seats in Scotland. A better poll would be:

Conservatives

Labour

Liberal Democrats

UKIP

The BNP

The Greens

Other

Epic fail. Even Maggie Thatcher, who is much more right-wing than the current Conservative party kept the NHS.

Coming from a 13-year-old English resident:
The Conservatives will win. Maybe not by a landslide, but they'll win, and Labour will probably be in the wilderness for 10-20 years. BNP will gain more seats, because they paid attention to the concerns that Labour never did, and the Lib Dems will lose seats.

No idea what will happen in Scotland.

Poll update still isn't very good. The DUP and SNP can't win a general election, because they only contest seats in Northern Ireland and Scotland respectively.

Hahahahaha. You really don't know UK politics do you. Healthcare is one area that the Conservatives aren't going to touch - in fact their campaign pledge is to ensure that the NHS doesn't get a real term budget cut. I'm afraid even our more extreme libertarians in the Conservative shadow cabinet (Alan Duncan, I'm looking at you) believe that healthcare is one of the few areas that the government has a responsibility to be involved in (the others being National Security and Policing).

I'm sorry, the Conservatives may reform the NHS and change it (talk of making it more of a quango) but scrap it? Not a chance in hell.

Hehe yea you should have probably done a little bit of research on the UK political system!

I wonder what Salmond would want to do with England if he was PM of Britain. Probably nothing nice to England... There is also no way the UK will let go of its national health service, do you really want to pay for such things like cancer treatment? No political party has a policy to scrap the NHS as far as I'm aware and there is no way the public would give them a mandate to do so.

I see no way back for Brown and Labour. Having lived in Scotland for five years I really hope the Lib Dems get the votes and not the SNP or the racists. I do fear slightly for the union at the moment.

BNP will gain more seats, because they paid attention to the concerns that Labour never did

I recieved this BNP leaflet through my door.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/djdamien/3577261701/

It claims its policies are not racist they are common sense. I think they are more concerned with all the young 'black' men getting it on with our 'pure' white girls. Labour generally doesn't touch stuff like that does it.

If you vote BNP you are voting for racists. :eyebrow:

Wow. Way to torpedo your post with it's own last sentence. You generally want to shy away from admitting you don't know what you're talking about, believe me, people will generally figure it out without you mentioning it. The only way that could have ensured you would be taken even less seriously is if you had added "and who's stoned out his mind right now."

SNP getting votes isn't the end of the world - they're being voted for not for nationalist policies but because they're a credible left wing alternative to Labour in Scotland. The worse they can really do is push for a referendum which, based on recent opinion polls, they'd loose. But yes, I really hope the Lib Dems make gains too - in part because I think Labour is going to be a mess and you need at least one party as a strong opposition and also because I'm a strong Lib Dem supporter

Your last sentence was redundant after the first two.

Nevertheless, the NHS is one of the few areas that every UK political party agrees on -- they all want to keep it. And have for abot 60 years. Because this 'socialist nationalised healthcare plan' actually works pretty damn well. And has for about 60 years. (it also isn't particularly socialist, but that's another matter)

At least one thing you should know about Britain, and it is that they have Universal Healthcare, and I highly doubt even the BNP or the UKIP would want to get rid of it.

This is quite possible -- devolution was introduced by Labour on the backlash against the last Conservative government.

Of course, I've never quite seen the problem in Scotland leaving anyway. They'd join the EU and all, so there wouldn't be any issues with travelling or the like. Why fight one meaningless desire with another?

Well, the BNP are socialist in the same sense (but slightly milder) that Mussolini was socialist -- they have some socialist policies, but completely reject the ideological basis for these. A better description, perhaps, would be 'populist'.

Labour will win if the economy fixes itself in the next 7 months.
Conservatives will probably win otherwise.

I'd like the Conservatives to win, but they should improve Enviromental Conservation and in social policies revert to an older time.
Economically they should require everything to be for the national good.
