Best Molecule in the World

Postby Galloism » Thu Jul 23, 2009 6:01 pm

Ah, you know I got to thinking today. We don't give proper respect to the molecules that make up our great world. How many times do you drive along the road, eat your food, talk on the phone, and do whatever else and you never think about the basic molecules you're interacting with. Therefore, I ask you to give me the best molecule on planet earth, with the reason why.

Aha, but there's a catch. I don't want you to give the name of the molecule. I only want you to give the molecular formula of it, and then describe the molecule and what makes it the best.

Before too long, after I've got some good samples, I'll make a poll so everyone can vote on their favorite molecule.

I'll start:

I submit C2H5OH.

This molecule is my favorite molecule because not only can it be used as fuel, it is also very good to drink. It lightens my mood, makes me happier, and maybe sometimes slightly fuzzy. It has a bad side, sure, but I enjoy using it on occasion.

So, what other molecules should we go for?

I would submit that H2O is pretty nice, but really, it wouldn't even be here without H. Granted, H is an element, but it's also technically a molecule. And it does great things. It... well what doesn't it do? Look up in the sky! See that big-abs light? Yeah, thats H hard at work.

I like Benzene: C6H6

Not because you can drink it or eat it, or any of those other things that have (probably) nominated alcohol, etc...

But because, as a Chemistry geek, I love resonance structures. Mmm, yummy delocalised electrons.

So many molecules to choose from... I'll stick to my favorite biomolecules:

1) oxytocin, which is pure, concentrated love and trust

2) endorphins, how the brain makes itself happy

3) theobromine, the essense of chocolate

Why not Gomberg's radical, then? Resonance and a stable unpaired electron. What more can you ask for? :)
