any time you have a strong enough fluctuating magnetic field, and place a coil (or even just a straight piece if the field is strong enough or in the right range of frequencies) of wire. you're going to have an electrical current flowing in that wire, if you give it the rest of a circuit to flow through.

i mean this is real basic basic basics of the behavior of electrical energy.

the only thing mind boggling to me is that there are so many people not more familiar with how the nonpersonal parts of the universe they live in actually works.

It's only been very recent that anyone as EVER been able to get a sufficient amount of electrical charge transferred safely however.

Except they cost a bomb, and low end models can't really produce the trickier stuff well.

They still exist. I think there are actually sites where you can custom order stuff, it just costs... alot.

If it can be proven that huge amounts of electricity can be generated with nothing but static and physical forces and then distributed wirelessly without bringing a plane down or electrocuting anyone then Tesla's dream of free electricity at a large scale could be a reality. It could then be bye-bye to electrical meters and the worry about climate change as far as the electricity sector of the energy industry is concerned. If it can be repeated for cars and diesel trains, then no more worries about oil.

i've seen things being charged wirelessly before, using a special mat and some kind of device that plugs into the battery of whatever's being charged.

i'll be excited when i can buy it and have a laptop sit at my desk with no wires.... apart from the DVI cable for the extra screen (wireless HDMI, anyone?), the mouse (could go bluetooth), and the eSATA HDD (using cable for that cos cable is fucking faster)

Hopefully by the time wireless electricity is made commercially available more WiFi points get installed so I can play... from my garden. Shame about the British weather, though.

"3D-printer"? Bah, you're thinking small...
I want my jet-pack!
(After all, it's the weight/volume of fuel needed that's held them back in the past...)
