Facebook?

Postby Dynamo2 » Wed Jul 22, 2009 10:23 am

Um... I've got one for you. How vital is facebook to you? My parents have not allowed me to have a page because of the admission process for colleges and future job applications. What pros and cons will I be looking at here?

I will never surrender to the vile temptations of social networking sites. They're evil incarnate, I tell you.

I used to be vital for me, but then NS took it's place.

Facebook is excellent for reconnecting with friends. Absolutely excellent. You can also do many many things with your profile if you're that type, or waste your time on other applications. Some apps are useful though. You also can keep track of what people are doing which is handy for keeping in touch.

The main con is that unless you have your settings correctly, everyone can see whatever you do. EVERYTHING will be transparent unless you go to settings. But employers, colleges and police can access accounts and check what you've done anyway. So you'd have to be very careful to post po-- erm offensive pictures on Facebook. ;)

No they can't. Not if you have your profile set to private.

I was under the impression they could contact Facebook and request this. I am pretty sure the police can anyway...

Hmm...

Well that's a plus if you're smart enough to have your settings correct. :lol2:

A social networking entity where you never actually need to meet people? Interesting...

If they have a subpoena, and if they already have enough evidence on you to procure one, Facebook is probably not gonna be what makes or breaks your case.

I'm on Facebook. I ask my friends to remove pictures of me that I don't want online if they upload them. I don't post things in public that I don't want publicly known. It's quite simple, really.

Of course. I do the same. I just thought that other entities could access accounts that even had the maximum privacy settings...

Facebook has been very 'meh' for someone like myself, who keeps up with his few friends elsewhere, and has no need of having my own little page, or whatever they do. :p

You should be thankful for that. If you have a Facebook account, it will be looked at by any admissions board or future job application. It is used to judge your character. If they see something they don't like, they will reject you even if your GPA is perfect and your the most qualified for the job. Something you may think is innocent fun, (such as posting photos of you and your friends drinking), may be taken the wrong way by someone who doesn't know you. It could hurt your reputation, and there is no way for you to get around it. Further, even if your page is clean, you may have friends who are willing to post controversial pictures may get you into trouble as well.

you can increase your privacy settings, you know. nobody but people you've allowed to view your profile (ie friends) will be able to if you set it up right. it should really come set up like that as default.

to answer the question, i use it a fair bit. i didn't go near it (or other "social networking" (shit term) sites) for a long time, but my g/f used facebook, so i got an account and found all my friends on there, too. now i use it daily just to see how my friends are doing, share stuff, set up events and things like that. i also like posting status updates (kinda like twitter, but less narcissistic :P)

It's been nice for getting back in touch with college friends I'd lost track of. Beyond that, though, it's nothing terribly special.

well, one way to get around it is to kill all the old people. or, you know, force them to get over themselves by making things very very common. hey everybody, remember when tattoos rendered you unemployable?

It's not vital, but it is useful for organizing events and the like.

If you don't want people to see your profile, you just have to change your privacy settings. If you want, you can set it such that nobody can see you but your friends (or people you add as friends).
