Oh, I remember asking myself that question some years back. I actually heard myself say once, "what's wrong with everyone else that they don't get me?"

It's a painful stage that's very hard to see through. Cool thing is, when you do see through it, the ability to laugh at yourself, really hear and understand others, and not have a gigantic chip on your shoulder becomes a terrific gift.

I think its most likely because I have the audacity to diagree with the majority on something. So obviously that makes me arrogant, because I am principled and stand up for what I think is right, even in the face of adversity.

Disagreeing with the majority doesn't take audacity. Disagreeing in a way that doesn't make you sound like a whiny, attention-whoring, bratty know-it-all and actually proposes alternatives to the so-called majority view takes audacity.

What you're doing takes about as much audacity as proposing that Justin Bieber is a talentless homunculus. Iffy in an all-girls middle school, but audacious? Hardly.

Well broken, sir. Sometimes I just go on a reply tear and forget to multi-quote.

Severe or not, it's a phase most young people with an appreciable intellect go through. Once you realize that it's okay if nobody in the room laughs at your OBvious Monty Python/Terry Pratchett/Red Dwarf/Douglas Adams/Dr. Who/etc. reference, life gets easier. Then you meet the hot young woman who DOES get your references, and before you know it, you're a college prof homeschooling your two adorable children!

Not in so many words, but in posting nothing in your jeremiads here but references to your own experience, you give a strong impression that you believe that what happened to you happens every day to everyone.

Not a whit. The local HS has the orchestra I can't provide for my 'cellist, and the area's children's chorus provides the choir I can't replicate at home. The dancer goes to ballet and tap classes, the singer to ballet and soccer. The younger one's friends from her dance class and soccer team are all in AWANA, so she goes there, too.

We have their friends over, and allow them to stay at their friends' houses when it's possible and appropriate. Just like public school folk. What we DON'T get is the constant peer pressure, clothing pressure, body image nonsense, mind-numbing cultural garbage used as the lingua franca (i.e. using crappy TV show lines as in-jokes, and such). My kids have cell phones and the older one is fixin' to start driving soon.

What could they possibly be missing out on that's a potential positive?
