I've said it before and I'll say it again: I never understand what people mean when they post this. "OBVIOUSLY I prefer people who look like me." At least, that seems to be what the bolded implies. Is this really true for a lot of people? I mean, okay; I will admit that I have a bit of a THING for people with green eyes. This is probably due to my total megalomania. But other than that, what I look like has no bearing on what I find attractive. I've dated 1 girl who was a fellow WASP, and no guys.

It is pretty well documented in the psychology literature that people seek out similarity in long term relationships, as a statistical generality. In the extreme cases, this can happen.

Not to say there aren't exceptions, but that's the typical tendency.

See, I dispute that. I think you seek what you KNOW. It just happens that most people are raised within their own "ethnicity", so that's what they know. When you're raised in the mishmash of ethnicities, cultures and cliques that is the California Bay Area, though, "what you know" does not always coincide with "what you are".

I'm not trying to be anti-family - it's just the culture shock of hearing modern-day women (girls, really) spouting the latest memo from the Pope in response to any questions about the appropriateness of having a dozen kids when you're earning $130/month working full-time. The government here is trying to get the birthrate down, but half the kids here want the president ex-communicated when I ask them; motherhood is the highest aim in life - end of argument. Divorce is illegal, abortion is illegal, contraception is heavily frowned on, and the poverty is crippling, but it makes no difference. Meanwhile, there's no religious objection to getting wasted and passing out in the street after gambling your paycheck away, as my coworkers do every Friday night. But ask about family planning and suddenly everyone is a perfect Catholic.

Until shit happens to them, I bet! I think that one should not have any more children then they can support and I think that there can be religious arguments made against excessive gambling and neglecting one's responsibilities to one's children, regardless of the gender of the parent in question. Christ does not condone divorce, but the Torah recognized the practical realities that might push a couple towards divorce, as did the Apostle Paul. Divorce and abortion are not the ideal- they are signs that all is not right in the world, but things happen which make divorce and abortion necessary reality. Besides, if Christian morality is only about sex to those people, then they have a very skewed view of Christian ethics.

Possibly true. Certainly statistics suggest racism is substantially reduced with more interracial contact and familiarity. It's not necessarily the case that the two explanations are exclusive; similarity explains some statistical variation in attractiveness, while familiarity explains another fraction. I don't know that there have been many good tests of the distinction.

I will say, though, a lot of the things I tend to find adorable among people with more or less different backgrounds could be ascribed to similarity as easily as familiarity. If you use a general enough scope, you can explain any specific attraction habit. Use similarity OR use difference - you should be able to get both to fit!

For example, a number of the mixed-race girls I've found adorable have very curly hair. Not quite as curly as a typical black woman would be with no straightening, but very tight natural ringlets. I have very curly hair myself (to a degree not too terribly commonly seen on white women), so clearly, I'm instinctively seeking out similar mates with similar amounts of hair curl.

I've been attracted to / involved with what may seem like a disproportionately Jewish population. I'm not Jewish, and if there are any Jews in my family tree, they're hiding pretty well (in the branch of the family tree that shows up from Germany in the late 19th century seems like the best bet). However, you could point out that I have the largest nose in my family, combining the proportionate width of the shorter noses of my mother's side of the family with the length of the slenderer noses of my father's side of the family, and explain this as my seeking like-nosed mates.
