They were bombing deep in Georgian territory, for instance. That isn't trying to drive out Georgian troops from South Ossetia. They also attacked Georgia from the Black Sea in the west. After a ceasefire agreement Russia maintained check points inside Georgia. None of these maneuvers are defensive, even if the trigger was.
