$500 extra so you can buy and install Windows on it anyway? Am I the only one not seeing any sense in this?

Sense has little do with anything, it never has and never will. It's all about perspective, sport.

Just thought I'd throw out that I'm currently using an Acer 5732z. A bit slow for gaming, but it's not given me any problems yet. (Had it for about half a year)

1200 can get you a pretty good desktop actually, a great one if you build it yourself

1200 can certainly but you a decent laptop

I know...but I think a lot of folks who buy Macs, whether it be their computers, their phones, their music players or itunes have done so largely not because of price or the attempt to save money. But because hey, look at me I own an iPhone, or an iPod or a Macbook air and so on and so on. Of all the people who use their products certainly composes a large group of people, if not a majority. I think many of them -most of them- probably did so for vain reasons over practical ones.

At about the 1 year mark, the 'spine' on my machine started to give way. Now the view 'flips' quite often. The spine could have been repared under warranty only if I shipped it to Acer. The company who sold it to me would have fixed it 'in house' for several hundred dollars. So, I don't use it nearly as much as I planned to and am planning on buying a new one soon.

There is no denying that Macbook Pros are good hardware (usually with decent GPUs, excellent battery life, and nice metal construction). They lack in screen resolution (but usually have high quality screens) and price (can't fix this). Personally I do not like the OS much, but that is for each to discover.

I completely forgot about HP's offerings -- mainly because the only one that interests me are the dm3t and Envy 15 (no longer on sale). Asus generally makes decent laptops from what I hear, but that one has a 1366x768 screen resolution (on a 16" screen no less!) which for anyone that does serious work is paltry (not that the OP said he did work, on the contrary...)

Can someone elaborate more on Compaqs? I'm just looking for a notebook myself, but I have, at best, $400 to work with. It's purely for my graduate work as my old dell is a piece of garbage (although it's my piece of garbage...).

Dells, in my experience, are terribly bad at cooling themselves down. This is incredibly painful if you're forced to sit with a laptop on your lap in a lecture hall for over an hour. My desktop, an XPS, also overheats enough to turn its room at least 5 degrees warmer than the rest of the house. Trash, but, like my laptop, my trash.

But the amount of people who use sense while saving money when purchasing a laptop or desktop (By not getting a Mac) are in the majority. This isn't about Apple Fans using sense, it's already obvious that they don't. This is about the general population.

But not everything? After all a lot of people still own Apple products....mostly because of the "cool" factor. But people buy computers simply because of its brand, and not only computers, but tvs and cars. Not to mention, I think if people thought they could, they'd probably buy a Mac.

<Sigh> Hardly, it's pricey and I imagine most people don't have the money. Though had Jobs allowed their OS to be used on other hardware aside their own early on, they'd probably be beating Microsoft right now.

Why is there all the hate with Acer? It's actually really good, it's my current computer.

To me, I think you should get a MacBook, HP, Acer, or Asus. Dell, in my opinion, is crappy. That's why I never buy Dell anymore or even use Dell computers, my Dell was always overheating and it was really slow and sluggish.
