Haven't had instrument ground school for ages. Probably visible moisture, updrafts, and there's something about the freezing layer.

First, that's a VFR altitude. Generally you aren't talking to an ATC facility. If you had radar flight following, you'd probably have to invent some other creative way to get the number out. Or just change the squawk.

Honestly, I've never been told to fly at that altitude when I was on with any ATC facility ever. I mean, I guess it's *possible*, but I've never seen it happen.

I have been told to fly at 7400 before, and at 7600 and at various other odd altitudes.

I suspect if you told them you were flying at 7500 feet, and they looked at your readout on the radar and it said "7500ft", they would take that as a normal communication. If you were at 19,000 feet though and said 7500 feet, they would take that as a communication of being hijacked. There's also various other ways you could communicate 7500 besides altitude.

LOL! Oh that reminds me of the time the C-150 flew into the Washington DC ADIZ, and they were escorted down by the military and arrested.

I was watching this, and I'm like...really? All this fuss over a slow ass aircraft that can't even get pass 100knots and only carries two people?

I'm trying to find that bumper sticker that came out after that event. I swear after 9/11, people just went fuck all over General Aviation.

Moisture, Unstable Air, and Lift.

Now it's my turn to ask a question.

What should've Mayor Dealy did to legally close Meigs Field?

I'll bet there's an approach procedure somewhere that starts at or below 7500 feet. Especially out west.

Oooh, that's a good one. I'd have to look it up to get the exact answer, but flying by the seat of my pants so to speak:

Release a NOTAM that the field was going to be closed and on what date, at least 30 days ahead of time.
Notify the FAA to remove the field from charts and its database on the date of closing.

There may be others, but I'm not certain what all.

Nope, they'll choose 7400 or 7600. They don't want that number used anywhere.

You are correct as far as I know. Once again, this is another example of post 9/11 attitude towards GA. I hope the Mayor enjoys his heliport (yes he actually does have a Heliport where Megis Field used to be. and his park.

At least the planes that were still parked there after he dug up the runway in the middle of the night got permission from the FAA to use the taxiway for takeoff.

Still, that was one of the dumbest things I had ever seen someone do with regards to closing an airport. I suspect it was because if he gave the proper 30 day notice, he figured that GA would rally the public opinion to keep him from closing it before he could. Doing it in the middle of the night, he only had to deal with a minor backlash.

Well yea, but the way I look at it. What if an aircraft had to make an emergency landing after they tore up the runway, and Megis Field was the only airport nearby? He would've had no way of knowing the state of the runway until it was too late.

Well, there's that too. It was incredibly dangerous, stupid, and unfair to the owners of aircraft that had their aircraft parked there.

The justification was equally stupid. Do you remember it? It was a "security risk" to have an airport that close to downtown. That's was (ostensibly) the reason why they bulldozed the runway in the middle of the night, level 16 aircraft stranded on the field. An aircraft that was en route to that airport then had to be diverted because it didn't have a runway anymore.

Ironically, it made the area even *less* secure, because now it's class G/E airspace instead of D, and anyone can fly through there that wants to without talking to anybody.

Stupid.

I remember that very well. A terrorist could take off from Megis Field and slam into an building downtown. Ok, when was the last time you saw a GA aircraft even bring down a building, much less kill anyone beside the pilot and any passengers that were on board?

Wasn't the runway only like 4,000ft (I don't live in Chicago)? I mean, you can't get hugely large aircraft taking off from a 4,000 foot runway unless you got one hell of a wind, and none would land there on the hope that they'll have one hell of a wind when it comes time to take off. I mean, at most you're looking at GA and maybe some light executive jets - maybe.

You know that game where you're not that into the thread so you read just the first page and then the last to see if the conversation went anywhere/try to figure out how it got from a-b?

This is the furthest adrift I've seen in a while, going from a(Obama's 'cool,' which like rock n' roll, everyone wants to be the one to declare it dead) to b(some tweaking out about flying). Awesome. I don't even want to know how it got there.

Wilgrove and Galloism, you've earned yourselves warnings for threadjacking in the extreme because you were "bored". If you want to have a discussion about flying start your own thread, don't take one and go on for pages and pages about a completely unrelated topic.
