I don't think I actually had a situation like that. I think that you're talking about was the time that the Alternator belt was broken, and we had enough battery power to start up the aircraft, and to take a short hop for KJQF to KEQY to the school's repair shop. Battery power is needed to at least get the aircraft started.

As for the Mags, they are a primary ignition system for the aircraft. On a 4 cylinder internal combustion engine, they provide the spark for the two spark plugs per cylinder. There are two mags, and two sparks plugs per cylinder to provide boost in performance, and to provide redundancy. Because if one mags happen to fail, then all 4 cylinders are still firing, you just lost power.

Isn't it awful when you have to eat your words?
"That is true, I am Thankful that the battery held out until we landed. God if we were up there and the battery gave out, then the engine would've given out as well, and that would've turn a bad situation into a worse one."

Glad to see you've been re-educated.

Aircrafts do have electrical system that is supported by the Alternator, and since we did not have a functioning alternator at the time, we would've had to rely on the battery.

So eat your own words you troll.

Very poor pilotage if you don't clean up your aircraft's configuration after pulling out of a spin so that you can get back into straight and level flight.

Let's try a "secondary stall" there bub.

What is static stability?

That means if you fly and you haven't checked to make sure your aircraft is airworthy, then that's your fault. It's also the owner's fault, but it still rests with you as well as pilot-in-command. Interestingly, the FAR never uses the term "Owner" by itself anywhere in it to my knowledge. It uses the term "Owner/operator" a lot. To "Operate" is defined in 1.1 as: "with respect to aircraft, means use, cause to use or authorize to use aircraft, for the purpose (except as provided in §91.13 of this chapter) of air navigation including the piloting of aircraft, with or without the right of legal control (as owner, lessee, or otherwise)."

That means you.

Yes, PIC responsibility is paramount. But in a practical sense, how do you comply with that requirement on a club or rental aircraft that you only see once or twice a month? Other than to see that the required docs are in the plane -- it's been a while, what are they? Airworthiness, registration, radio?

Positive Static Stability is when an aircraft return to a previous stable condition after disturbance.

Negative Static Stability is when an aircraft does not return to previous stable condition after disturbance, but goes further away from stable conditions.

Netural Static Stability is when an aircraft does not return to stable condition, or goes further away from stable condition.

Not quite. You're confusing static and dynamic stability.

Positive Static stability is the tendency of an aircraft to return in the direction of a previously stable condition. (E.g. - rolled left, and the plane starts to roll to the right back towards neutral)

Negative Static stability is the tendency of an aircraft to continue in the direction of the disturbance. (E.g. - rolled left, and the plane wants to continue rolling further to the left)

Neutral Static Stability is the tendency of an aircraft to remain in the new state (E.g. - rolled left, and the plane stays rolled to the left approximately how far you rolled it)

Now, lets talk dynamic stability. Positive, neutral, negative - and do planes always have some kind of dynamic stability?

7500, 7600, 7700.

7500 is a hijacking.
7600 is a communications failure.
7700 is an emergency of some type.

If the hijacker knows this, and won't let you change the transponder code or tell air traffic control that there's a hijacking (but lets you continue communicating normally otherwise), is there another way of communicating it?

Bzzt, wrong. Only planes with positive static stability (around that axis) have can have a dynamic stability of any type. Dynamic stability refers to the oscillations when returning in the direction of the previous undisturbed state. Positive stability - oscillations get smaller. Neutral stability - oscillations remain the same. Negative stability - oscillations get progressively larger until the aircraft loses control or the pilot takes correction.

[quote="Galloism"Now, lets talk dynamic stability. Positive, neutral, negative - and do planes always have some kind of dynamic stability?[/quote]

Dynamic Stability is an aircraft overall ability to return to original position.

Positive: Will have the overall ability to return to original position.

Neg: Will not have overall ability to return to original position

Neutral: Restoring forces are not there, so there is no change.

Also, no. While an aircraft may have static stability, it may not have dynamic stability.

As far as I know, you can squawk 7600, and cut off all communication with ATC. however, this won't give ATC any confirmation on a hijacking.

That's what I've read, All I've been taught is the three squawk codes.

Using the numbers 7500 in any communication is seen as a hijacking notification. You won't find those numbers anywhere in the ATC system except on the sheer chance that you're flying 7500ft at the time. They may ask on the radio if you meant to say "7500", and when you confirm it, it's taking as a confirmation that the plane has been hijacked.

Ok, I don't know that one. I don't build planes.

Trick question. I yield. There are a number of unstable modes... The most famous and a mode every student pilot should see is a long period stability/instability in the longitudinal axis. Trim a plane up, give the stick a bump and see what happens. In a stable airplane, the oscillations will dampen and the plane will return to level flight. In an unstable airplane, the oscillations will gradually increase in amplitude. Most famous example from my history is a P-3 Orion. Long period lateral modes are unstable in most aircraft.

Now short period modes MUST always be stable, else you end up with some terrible PIO.
