Yep.

If people get sick from something, no one will buy it.

So how is that punishment? Especially when considering that amount they spend on advertising? The media tends to not want to piss off large customers.

Seriously; you have no issues with yourself or family members getting killed or a shortened life by a dirty businessman?

I feel like we should try to prevent things. I also feel like we should punish behaviors that negatively affect society as a whole.

There's six billion people on this planet.

I don't think one company's screwup is going to kill all of them.

Profit motive will force companies to do proper testing lest they want to still turn a profit. Testing is part of natural R&D. If it kills a couple people or puts them in a hospital, no one will buy their products and they will lose profit. They might also be forced to pay restitution to injured families, which will also be another lost profit.

No, I say why don't we examine the regulations, find out what caused this, and modify them to prevent future problems.

There will be other players in the media. And a "Product X kills Y women and children" is sensationalist and will have many eyes tuned in. Eyes that command high advertising fees.

Indeed. A few thousand deaths is nothing to get upset over.

The FDA comes to mind.

Yet this will not bring back people who are dead.

Yet this will not bring back people who are dead nor does it punish the person(s) responcible.

1) No, tough shit. Dwi.

2) Responcible isn't a correct spelling, even Queen's English uses "responsible".

3) It does. It's called losing money and paying compensation.

Other than land them on a corporate blacklist.

Prevention is a fool's errand. You'll end up restricting freedoms on the basis that something bad might happen instead of actually punishing people for screwing up. It's a very dangerous slippery slope. And who are you to decide what negatively affects society?

Why can't a company do the very same thing with a product?

Ok since we are talking about testing products, I'll stick to that. The FDA. They don't actually test, but they approve or ban products based on tests. If they approve a product and it turns out to be bad and kills many people due to side effects, the shit hits the fan. They're dragged in front of congress, it's all over the media, they lose their jobs and they are guilty in the court of public opinion.

If they are very slow with the approval process there is not a word about it from the media. Meanwhile people die due to a lack of good medication that would save lives. There are perfectly safe medicines available in Europe for instance that are not yet approved, or even banned in the US.

Yes, regulations to test products kill people.

It will kill the killers. When a state kills the innocent, they don't come back to life either. The state kills far for people.

I honestly find it hard to debate people who respond to an argument about product regulation with "people die, tough shit."
