On the notion that why homosexuality occurs "doesn't matter"

I initially did this as a response to that thread, but I think it's worth a separate one.

Often times debate as to the roots of homosexuality will be dismissed by claiming it "doesn't matter" what causes it because homosexuality supposedly isn't a big deal in and of itself. This point may be relevant if the subject is... well, how big a deal homosexuality is in and of itself. (Or maybe if the subject is gay marriage or gay adoption.)

But the nature vs. nurture question of sexual orientation isn't a subset of this debate. It is its own subject, and perspectives on it often reflect on a variety of other perspectives. To just dismiss this debate offhand, even when it is the central subject, because homosexuality ITSELF isn't a big deal, strikes me as rather irrelevant...

I think it matters as a scientific curiosity. I, for one, am on a neverending quest to learn everything I can. The mental process behind homosexuality is a part of 'everything', so I'd like to know about it :)

its obviously mostly a matter of nature. what exactly makes that nature is unknown and relevant only to those biologists who study sexuality.

Personally I am 100% accepting of homosexuals and think it is completely alright and maybe even beneficial to nature to have them around, and would still be if it were nothing but a choice.

But I suppose it matters slightly for the sake of advancing science and dismantling homophobia.

the whole question is posed so as to diffuse or support the notion of gay people being perverts. if having sex with someone of your own gender isnt perversion--and its not--the question of why you do it is not compelling.

Doesn't matter. I personally don't care too much. I'm straight, and pretty happy about it because guys are ugly, and chicks can be hot. But that's about my level of caring, lol.

Whether or not homosexuality is a choice or something you're born with matters because of anti-discrimination laws in the USA. In (very) short terms, if it's innate the government isn't allowed to discriminate based upon it, but if it's a choice they can.

Like you can control the fact you have a dominate right side? Or perhaps your desire for another person? That's why homosexuality matters in science, and society. It is an acceptance of varition.

Wouldn't I just wish my school had've trained the fine motors skills to both rather than right. Since I had none as a kid
