Then there's a bunch of ghosts left behind when the darkness lifts back into the sky. So, a way to counter the effects of having your soul ripped out is by turning yourself into a black&white cardboard cutout. This should give you just enough time to jump off the boat and into the ocean where you can hopefully swim to safety.
