The raider hate was expected, but still seems a bit silly

Your not going to get a dedicated and knowledgeable gameplay mod without it being someone who is heavily involved in either the GA or SC; that, realistically speaking, means either a raider or a defender. Can't be avoided.

Do you not think that Sedge had exactly the same conversation your now having with the other mods and admins when he was offered the job? Do you not think that unless they felt he could be neutral he wouldn't have
got the job?

It does provide a bit of conflict of interest. Much of Sedge's work in the WA & SC was defender oriented and gave the SC a strong defender slant instead of keeping things neutral. That and there are other SC people who are more qualified to show neutrality to be a forum moderator than he is IMO.

Even still, he's only a forum moderator, not a game moderator. I think there are better qualified, active, and more neutral people in the SC that would be good forum mods that won't lean one way or another.

I think Max Barry gave the Security Council a "strong defender slant" instead of keeping things neutral, as in politically irresponsible. Our mission statement is not consistent with the aims of raiding. Sedge didn't have much to do with it, the foundation was already set.

First of all, Sedge is a forum mod, there is really not much decision making done by mods relating to forum stuff that has an impact of gameplay which would involve taking a pro-defender or pro-raider viewpoint, of most if not all of the decisions made by the mod team over the years that affect gameplay pretty much all gameplayers have the same opinion of them regardless of their military stance, and most of those decisions were probably made by someone from higher up anyway, not by the mods.

In addition, if Sedge were oneday to be made a game mod, as griefing rules no longer exist there is not really anywhere for bias to have an impact.If he DEATed a raider or something like that and the other mods thought it wasn't justified they could fix it and even remove him if they had too. As for IPs, I'm pretty sure it's recorded when a mod views them, so he'd get caught if he tried to steal an bunch.

I still don't think Sedge would do any of that anyway, there are much easier ways to get at people's IPs and whatnot than becoming a mod. We almost never agree, but he doesn't just try to troll me, and he has never once bribed me with cookies!

However many forums you have been a global mod on, you have not been a mod on this forum. You are, consequently, uninformed about the conditions under which information is available to NS mods.

Part of my professional work is to moderate readers' online comments on a newspaper. A mis-step by a moderator there could result in a multi-million-dollar law suit. Yet moderation actions on this forum -- including which mod accesses what information -- are actually more easily and closely monitored than moderation on the newspaper forum.

However, there's a more effective protection than that: Sedge himself. Those of you who knew him as an active defender don't know him as an active mod. Nor, indeed, could any of us before the fact. But we did know from experience what effect that red name-tag had on our own former outlooks, and we see no reason to expect otherwise from Sedge.
