Too much for what? Besides aren't we talking about Porsches? The most expensive Porsche ever produced was the GT at about $450,000. A typical Porsche is much less than that.

Well, the Continental is a Phaeton, the R8 is a Gallardo. The thing about Porsches is that they're not anything else, and I'm not convinced VW will be able to keep its hands off the Porsche engineers and their ideas. Or, worse, VW just uses Porsche's selling power to milk it for all the cash it can, and development in new Porsche models gets reduced to one item in the VAG R&D budget, so the new GT3's engineers will compete for cash with the new Seat Leon 1.4.

In short, I'm not a fan of VW. Some of the individual brands are good, but the company as a whole is a piece of crap and reliant on state support. I don't trust them as far as I can throw them.

That a VW and an Audi borrowed from their upmarket cousins is not sufficient evidence that the sky is falling. I'm not living in fear of a VW Cayman.

And I've come around on the Cayenne. Yes, on a certain level (the one I verbalize whenever I see one) I think it shouldn't be. But really, Porsche since the very first one was sold, raced, and won on the next weekend, Porsche has been about winning races, and the Cayenne does that. I watched an off road rally that started off in Russia on the Speed channel where there were factory efforts by Land Rover and others who were also rans to the privateer Porsches. I may not like it, it may not be my thing, it may be the only car they've ever made that I wouldn't at least want to test drive, but it does what Porsche's do, win.

Perhaps as a Porsche, the Cayenne is so so. But as a sports SUV it is top notch. And having read tons of reviews, heard all the outrage from Porsche purists, and driven multiple Porsches myself, I say, it is a legitimate Porsche.
