You should NOT throw around the F-word when Panzerjaeger is around, he's very particular about its definition. I will agree that Jan Brewer is a twit but a fascist? Probably not, no.

Hitler could do things to/with the German people because of the cultural and political differences between them and present-day Americans. What was possible then isn't possible now because of said differences. Germany was in an entirely different situation in the early part of the 20th century than America is in this one.

I think the economic problems and the fact that the Allies were badgering Germany non-stop about reparations had more to do with it than German culture or tradition. Of course, it still wasn't anything like the present day U.S.

It was probably a mixture of both, but German culture/tradition/politics/banana stickers eventually promoted the German Empire, which led to the war and subsequent reparations. You're right, but I would argue that the autocratic and militaristic tendencies of Germans at the time is what promoted those circumstances.

I would note the new governor of Rhode Island, Lincoln Chafee, served in Congress as a Republican. It is not prudent to put him in the Dem camp just because he won as an independent. Yes he beat the Rep but he also beat the Dem.
It seems more likely he would caucus with the Reps.

*shrugs* We're going to be in a gridlock anyways, so might as well. For once Democrats need to have the balls.

That's not a really well thought out idea. Democrats will get the blame for gridlock and Republicans will sweep elections in 2012. The best course of action at the moment is to lean more towards the right and cut deals with the Republicans in the House and Senate to get legislation passed. Efforts to promote bipartisanship will work in the Democrats' favor. If we try to block every big of legislation without negotiation, we will look like assholes and more Democrats will be looking for work coming November 2012.

The biggest issue is that we weren't as energized during this election cycle. The Democrats' coalition was demoralized and that's probably a key factor as to why we lost. People's disappointment in Obama and the general feeling that Congress has fucked up in regards to the economy have left them unmotivated to vote (i.e. unwilling to choose between right-wing demagogues and corrupt, incompetent left-wing buffoons). I think the biggest issue is that the Democrats haven't been effective in promoting their achievements. They haven't been effective at defending their legislation. The GOP kept the campaign against the administration even after 2008 elections were over. We need to do the same thing.

Democrats should now make overt efforts for bipartisanship and work on the national debt issue. That will work to our advantage. I know that many of us are afraid that Tea Partiers and Republicans are going to be irrational extremists, but I believe we should give them a chance. They've elected quite a few moderates during this election cycle and we should give them a warm welcome. If they reject our offers to work together then first blood will be on them. The Democrats need to preserve some sense of dignity and pride rather than acting childish and simply throwing any Republican proposal out the window. We need to be tact and diplomatic in order to rebuild the coalition for 2012.

Note: If they impeach Obama, that's fine with me. Let Biden be President!
