Bluth Corporation wrote:Sure, but was it worth it? Was the economic value of what was produced greater than the economic value of what went into it? If not, then it's even worse--not only were these jobs not actually producing any new economic value, they were actively destroying economic value.

How?

Think about it carefully. It's rare for this to be true of anything but military spending - and even some fraction of military spending ends up being recycled in activity down through the private sector. What value is "wasted"? Only, really, consumed non-renewable resources. Labor costs are being circulated right back into the economy. Labor prices? Virtually unaffected by the government making small dents in unemployment during the eternal "labor surplus."
The same goes for everything else you mention, when it's government-subsidized. For private firms, the incentive is to get more out of it than they put in, so you can be pretty sure that if an economic activity continues for a while, it's because it creates a net increase in economic value. But government does not have the same set of incentives or constraints as private firms do.

Conversely, they have no incentive to contribute to public goods that any old Joe can use up. Even if that public good has a cost:benefit ratio less than 0.1:1, it's not worth their making it, generally.

It is precisely those large public goods that governments do a fantastic job of creating, compared to the private sector. Highways are a major example. Vehicular damage due to poorly maintained roads for regular drivers currently adds up to tens of billions of damage per year - which is a small fraction of the value those drivers place on the system, let alone the value of commercial trucking.
That's just it--they do create something that wasn't there.

No more and no less than an apparently useless government agency.
Perhaps it's convenience (not for you and I, obviously, but for someone somewhere in the chain, and to such a degree that it outweighs the inconvenience caused to you and I), perhaps it's increased efficiency due to specialization, but as a rational person I have to think that it's there even if I can't see it myself because there's no other way to explain the fact that these firms continue to survive. A private firm simply cannot last if its expenditures consistently exceed its income.

That doesn't mean they contribute net value. I can earn money by cheating and scamming people and profit while having a net negative social impact. I can cause billions of dollars in environmental and health damages while profiting millions of dollars in mining and manufacturing.

Pretty much and the Federal government allows them to gut the Working and Middle Class. Someday it will lead to a reckoning that neither side is likely to enjoy.

This, and Corporate America has discovered that they can let a whole bunch of people go, which scares the rest of their employees to the point where productivity goes up. That's a win-win.

Yes Corporation = Body of Government not a Business. Reading Comprehension Fail.

I find it ironic you are trying to tell a Fascist what Corporatism is yet seem unable to comprehend what you are posting. Corporatism lets break it down Corpus as in Body. Corporatism which you would understand if you actually read the Wiki article is a Guild like system where Union leaders and Corporate leaders of the same Industrial Field work together as a council aka Corporation. They make decisions on various things that need to be resolved. These corporations allow autonomy within the economy of Fascism thus not leading to a need for the government to step in. The Fascist Government only steps in when a Corporation can not reach a decision thus keeping government influence to a rather limited role except for Nationalized Industries.

Corporations did not serve as the body of political representation under the Reagan Administration. A corporation in this sense is clearly understood to mean a business, hence the 'industrial and professional' part. Such a system is Fascism or State Corporatism, not Neo-Conservatism. As much as you despise that ideology, it is not Corporatism. I will refrain from the annoying habit of accusing somebody with different ideas of failure.

You are aware that Mussolini reorganized the Italian government to establish twenty-two 'corporations' which would resolve all matters of economic importance and represent the political ideas of business owners, yes?

According to the sources I have sighted, Fascism is inherently a Corporatist or Corporatist-influence political and economic system. If you can provide an alternative source, please do. Also, am I to presume you have stopped accusing Reagan of Corporatism?
