Singapore says tanker seized by pirates off Kenya

Singapore says pirates seized a liquefied gas tanker registered in the city-state 105 miles (165 kilometers) off the coast of Kenya.

The Singapore Maritime and Port Authority said in a statement Sunday that the YORK was traveling from Mombasa to Mahe in the Seychelles with 17 crew when pirates commandeered it late Saturday.

The authority says it is working with the ship's owner, York Maritime Co., and government agencies to recover the ship.

It did not give the size of the vessel or the value of the gas it was carrying.

Except the reason they are calling for more money and troops is because they control almost none of the country, which is still split between secessionist groups, two separate Islamic factions, some remaining warlords, and an utterly ineffectual government which controls a few square blocks of Mogadishu.

Invading Somalia is insanely hard for all those reasons, plus the part where assault rifles are cheap and plentiful among the population. So easy, it is not.

They are unquestionably very good. They are also unquestionably extremely expensive. You have to look at the cost/benefit of operating something that expensive in comparison to what it really provides, especially for a second rate power with a diminished global presence and an impoverished government. And face it, at the end of the day its only a few hundred blokes. The UK's security will never hinge on the SAS.

And yah, quite a bit of dick waving. Very popular with the general public, makes them feel good because they are 'better' than delta force and such. Pity the Royal Navy, which really is key to UK security is being gutted though.

They already have that right. They just choose not to exercise it, because they bothered to think about what would happen if the pirates felt that not killing anyone would be a threat to their own lives.

Especially since the pirates are quite capable of killing everyone on board from a kilometer away.
