Common sense and good manners would suggest that players new to a forum lurk a while to learn any special conventions.

Reading the rules, particularly that section of The One-Stop Rules Shop that relates to the specific forum, is also a good idea.

Had the OP done these things, he would have realised that one of the ingredients of a post on General is a statement of an opinion, question or topic that can be discussed or debated. A petition is merely a list of names of those who agree. This makes for very poor discussion.

(And speaking of poor discussion, don't anyone try to claim you were part of the "First General Thread Closed For Deterioration Into Insert Appropriate Destination Here". Scolo beat us to it.)
