He may have a longer criminal record than just this. Additionally, we don't know how much, or what kinds of chocolate he stole. Additionally, he obviously had the funds at hand (budum ptsh) to legally acquire the chocolate.

Well from the brief article, it seems that the judge may be using extreme sentencing, even for their system.

The article is almost devoid of real information, so I figure I will try to stick to the basics. Obviously, if the money, and gloves are also stolen then it makes more sense that he receive the heavier punishment.

I'm just saying that the information in the article is less than great. I mean, maybe he only stole the chocolate, maybe he's been caught previously, and amputation isn't as rare as reported.

And, not only is it a non-essential that he stole (he didn't steal bread to feed his starving family, for example) but he had $900 fucking sitting in his car. Either he stole that too, or could have afforded a damn candy bar.

Edit: Anyway I am not in a position to take or comment what their laws are; the only thing I can say is that the proportionality of the crime vs. the punishment is not equal. It also did not show that the court has been exhaustive in its job to mete out the punishment .... maybe mental conditions do not even exists in those countries.
