Lucky for all of us, Karakov is a lousy shot.

Cutting off the hand was a typical punishment for theft in that area, much like stoning was a typical punishment for adultry.

Was that a law? - Yes
Is he a criminal? - Yes

Perhaps he should have thought that his hand will be cut off before he committed a crime.

Well from the brief article, it seems that the judge may be using extreme sentencing, even for their system.

Why? Proportionality is important. Losing your hand over some chocolate isn't justified. All it really does is encourage a life of crime, since how is the person supposed to be able to do honest work with only one hand? Why on earth should the punishment make it harder for the man to live an honest life afterwards?

It's not justified even for their system, as in the judge handed down a verdict that was too severe even under the Shah.

People also need to stop the knee-jerk support of the law without consideration. An unjust or harsh law can be fairly criticised.

I'm critical of both theft and any justice system in which physical mutilation is an acceptable punishment. We do call it "justice", not "revenge."
