We might be suffering from some communication issues here. To me a 'noob' is a player who lacks maturity, who can't spell, who godmods and so forth. A newbie, or alternatively newb, is simply a new player.

Noob is a new player. Newb is a new player. I have a variety of words to describe the kind of poster described above, but few of them are appropriate for this forum.

The rule of UrbanDictionary is absolute:

I'm actually very sad to see certain things gone...specifically, the Zooke Memorial threads, and pretty much every trace of Stephistan and Tactical Grace.

Especially the Zooke threads. Damn.

In what ways? I never got to see the Jolt forums and it's pretty much taboo here.

It's a long story that's been rehashed several times, so I'll give you the short version.

Before JOLT, Max hosted the game and forums himself. They got too big and JOLT offered to host them. JOLT didn't listen to the players or mods. OMAC aquired Jolt, and made a contract with Max to develop the long awaited NS2. They didn't do so to his specs. Then they opened it to beta without major components even having been planned, much less being in place. Furthermore, the economics engine they designed required players being segregated into small "worlds" with no interaction possible between worlds. When the complaints started, OMAC ignored them completely. Finally, they slowly added the "war" feature, which was poorly designed and executed. Players howled in complaint, and were ignored completely. Then OMAC had the gaul to ask people to advertise their abortion on a review site. They weren't pleased with the results. Eventually, they shut down the game and wiped it, directing players to try one of their inhouse pay for play (IIRC) games.

And just to put the whipped cream on the icing, there were some pay features, and there were complaints about their billing, players not getting the features they had payed for, and in at least a couple of cases OMAC changing the wording of contracts after having recieved payment; and they basically breached their contract financially with Max. http://www.nationstates.net/page=news/2 ... index.html

But OMAC's shittiness doesn't stop at that.

OMAC gave Max and the hard working mods rubbish treatment, including stripping them of mod powers unannounced.
They killed off two other games they aquired - Utopia Kingdoms and Earth 2025. And IIRC there were cries of financial/billing shenanegans in both of those cases as wll.

Being from Earth2025, this is the second time Jolt has killed off an old forum with a decent amount of lulz inside.

That was all fine, it was when they put those ads that ran across the first post of every page so you couldn't even read it.. that was bizarre and basically a sign that they really didn't give a shit about anything.

Well, being as we no longer have anything left to lose on Jolt if we say meeeeean things, I don't think I need to restrain myself the way I was in prior rants on the matter.

We tried our damnedest to warn people to save copies of their own threads, because we had no idea when/if (now clearly a matter of "when") they would pull the plug on the old forum. I hope desperately that people took the advice and that nobody completely lost threads they really wanted to hang onto. If you haven't gotten backups, use those Wayback links and stuff that others have suggested. Hopefully somebody has or can get copies of stuff like the Zooke threads, DFD's epic war thread, and so on. I personally have my important roleplay and storyline threads, the original NS Quotes thread, and a scattering of others.

And, if you'll pardon my sounding entirely too much like my bastard mod alterego, fuck Jolt. Up the backside with an entire gang of piston-driven hyperactive robotic hyenas dual-wielding red-hot rusty tire irons covered in sulfuric acid. (That's still the mild version. The full version involves syphilis and implying Jolt sucks something diseased.) As of now I have no more reason to visit that pit of obnoxious ads and idiotic administration (with apologies to Lydias, who seems to be the only competent person in that $deity-forsaken place,) and the Reploid Productions account on the Jolt forums shall never login again.

There's no going back now, and while I am saddened to see so much Nationstates history lost forever, at the same time all ties to Jolt are now well and truly gone; there's only one direction Nationstates can go, and that's forward. In just a year and a half, the new forum has laid new foundations to replace the old. We've been around for 8 years now, and luck willing in another 8 we'll still be here, and Jolt will be nothing more than a Wiki article about a defunct company!

The reason it fucks me off is that this has happened to me before. There used to be a forum called Netslaves.com back in the day which imploded. It had some of the best threads I've read and been involved in. Also very acute articles by people like Steve Gilliard. When the site imploded due to shitty politics all the threads went bye bye as well. I hate...I mean really really hate it when amazing threads and posts and peoples hard work gets zapped like that. I know you folks warned people and suggested back ups which is fine but what stopped the dickwads at Jolt (well the question answers itself) giving a copy of the site to Max Berry to host somewhere else...at the end of the day it is a part of net history.

I notice that this is becoming more common as well, with sites like Yahoo News deleting older news stories...

It took months of nagging by Max, and when they finally sent the boss a file, it was such a hackjob piece of shit that it was completely unusable. By the time we'd determined there was no way we could salvage anything useful out of the file, what little communication we had with Jolt had effectively dried up.
