you use a Chinese typing software which works on a QWERTY keyboard and it took me barely longer to type than it would have in English.(not counting thinking about how to phrase it so that it would be grammatically correct).

how does it work? do you type the transliteration of the word then choose from a list of possible characters?

Yes! I've spoken Chinese all my life, haha. It's rare to find someone who speaks Chinese here!
你学中文学了多久了? 喜欢吗?
How long have you been learning Chinese? Do you like it?
对了,你不应该直接从英文翻译. 虽然我们用英语说 "I'm learning Chinese in school," 但是如果你在用中文,应该说“我在学校学中文”. (希望你不在意!)
Oh yes,you shouldn't translate it directly from English. Although in English we say, "I'm learning Chinese in school," but in Chinese you should say"我在学校学中文”. (Hope you don't mind me correcting you!)
你有什么问题就能问我 (:
You can ask me if you have any questions (:

You obviously know more Chinese so I had to put that in google translate.
我什么时候说我只说中文?我是美国人,所以我说英文比我的中文很好。
母语 means mother tongue and 华侨 means overseas chinese (were you having problems with those words?) I was asking if you were also an overseas chinese since you said it was your first language. I didn't ask if you only spoke Chinese, haha xD
(Babelfish is usually a more accurate translator than google translate, it was my lifesaver when I was learning another language in school.)
Actually my English is probably better than my Chinese too, in Singapore schools teach everything in English except for chinese classes -shrugs-

thanks for the quick lesson! It's nice to know other people learn the same things as I do. As far as my Chinese is concerned I studied it for 4 years, but now I've fallen into a lull since I moved, but it was cool to drag it out of the back of my brain for conversation.

Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world, we've got more than double the number of english speakers.

My mistake. We beat them by only about a hundred million or so.

Does the list include dialects? I can't find it to be stated anywhere. I know plenty of people who can speak only one dialect and the language itself. Yes, there are such people
