The Sookie Stackhouse mysteries series (which has become the tv show True Blood) deals with a lot of issues - racism, sexism, homophobia, violence, morality - that Twilight could never hope to touch. They can be a little repetitive over the span of eight novels but they're not bad for light reading.
The vampires in that don't sparkle and they're definitely not vegetarians.

Because Twilight is aimed at 12 year old Christian girls. Hell, the Moonlight series is pretty soap operatic, but my God, Twilight makes even it look hardcore. Though Moonlight does have some decapitations and stuff...

and lets not forget the two TV versions of vampires; Dark Shadows and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Of course our "mythology" of vampires now comes solely from Bram Stoker's Dracula
