Okay, so Ifreann exaggerated the OP a bit. I do find the extremes of reaction to the Twilight series quite amazing. There is obviously a fanatic legion of fans out there, and equally obviously, the books have driven other people to distraction. I haven't read any, not yet, though I may do so just to see what the fuss is, but given that vampires don't actually exist, the author can describe them pretty much any way she cares to describe them. It isn't as if there's an anti-defamation leagues protecting the image of the undead, you know. And if the books aren't great literature, well, so what? Most young adult books aren't great literature.

Invaded! How one small town became overrun with vampires

Residents of Forks, Washington State, are still stunned by what a piece of assiduous Googling from Twilight author Stephenie Meyer has unleashed on their town. Looking for the US's rainiest location in which to set her vampire series, she lighted upon the small town, population 3,221.

Fans of the books and film, based around Bella Swan and her dreamy vampire love interest Edward Cullen, began pouring into Forks. Today hundreds visit the town daily; its visitor count for June was more than 8,000 - around the number who used to come in a year. Restaurants have Twilight-themed menus with dishes such as Bellasagne, shops sell Twilight items, and tours cover the books' locations.

The logging town has been transformed, says Mike Gurling of the Forks Chamber of Commerce. "Two years ago we did not have a cash register or credit card terminal. Now our sales of anything that says 'Forks' have increased dramatically." A literary symposium was held last month in Forks high school, including - unusually for a symposium - "an actual, real Prom". Chris Cook, editor of the local paper and author of guide book Twilight Territory, says the school's principal was mobbed at a Seattle airport when a teenage fan spotted his Forks Spartan jacket and started yelling, "He's from Forks, he's from Forks!" The fervour is such, Cook says, that a local evangelist, Hallelujah Bill, has started preaching to fans about the dangers of becoming cult followers of the books.

While some don't like the attention Twilight has brought, others are enjoying the kudos. Cook says that "traditionally, Forks has been considered by Seattle folks as the sticks, the home of loggers and simple rural ways. Now it's a bit of a status symbol."

Susan Brager, who runs the Miller Tree Inn, now also known as Cullen House, says that although she isn't a huge fan of the books - "not great literature" - she definitely appreciates the tourists. "They like it when it rains," she says.

"What could be better than that for a community that gets more than 120in each year?"

I never liked the Twilight series books, it's just really bad writing, and is nothing more than masturbation material for prepubescent girls who haven't yet discovered porn on the Internet.

Vampires do not sparkle, they are not vegetarians and they do not refrain from sex! >:(

They are sex having, meat eating, blood drinking sons of bitches who melt or explode in the damn sun!

Well, let's hope the people of Forks make their money while they can -- like Burkittsville, MD (the setting of The Blair Witch Project) they are going to be hassled for years by dumbasses who think it's all real.

Luring people into reading PERIOD is a good thing. I had a heated discussion with a Tolkien freakin a sci-fi convention panel when the first movie came out. He hadn't seen it but declared it shit because it DARED to desecrate JRR by having the TEMERITY to put his vision on screen, and would keep kids from reading the books. I opined that 1) the books are a bit boring for kids -- my impression of The Two Towers (which I read first because my library hadn't the others) was "La la la, elves and dwarves, and men, and wee folk wandering through the forest singing.... ooops! Here come some orcs to kill them cos they're making so much noise! Killination, killination.... boy we're so happy we won, let's have a singalong!" 2) seeing the movies and then seeing the novels with the movie covers would encourage kids who were now familiar with the story to read the original.

The Tolkien freak almost had a brain aneurysm on the spot.

So, yeah, if they're reading I don't care if it's poor writing. Their tastes will mature and they'll move onto better stuff once they've plowed through all that's available in the series.

My first LARP character was an Embraced werewolf. Never got to play him, coz Abominations aren't allowed, but I had a great time making a backstory!

And I doubt they have sex. They're dead, after all. And worst of all, they don't even exist.

I think the Anne Rice vampires could have sex... they just didn't get much/anything out of it or something. It's been a while since I read her books, but I seem to remember it was something like this.

Salem's Lot was a good read.

Actually, this is what I was reading when I was prepubescent (I read through his books until I caught up and then moved on. I have to go through the Dark Tower series again now that it's done though).

Not sure the economic boost is worth the hordes of Twilight fans.

You've never been to a depressed former logging town then, have you? ANYTHING that gets the economy up and running is EXCELLENT for the town. Look at Leavenworth, WA -- they became a Bavarian resort town after logging dried up in the 70s. Places like Forks and Leavenworth would just about disappear if they didn't reinvent themselves. Forks needs to use the short-term fame wisely. North Bend, WA was the setting for Twin Peaks, and that boost evaporated pretty fast. Then there's Roslyn, WA -- the setting for Northern Exposure (subbing for Cicely, AK). The fame evaporated quickly there, too, but Village Pizza is still the best in the state, for my money.

Point is, make hay while the sun...rather...while the vampires sparkle (ugh).

True Blood strikes me as more representative of vampiric appetites...at least moreso than Twilight.

Yeah, it had to be both rainy AND depressing. For that, you've no better location in the US than the Pacific Northwest coast.
