Has anyone else notice the complete lack of sentence-structural diversity in the Twilight saga's book? The writing quality is quite honestly deplorable, even amateur at best.

I've read the novel of Let The Right One In - well, about half of it, to be honest. It is thoroughly creepifying and excellent, so much so that I couldn't finish it.

I've also read one of Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire novels - well, about half of it, to be honest. It is thoroughly infuriating, so much so that I couldn't finish it. The vampires are serial killer rapist monsters like they're ought to be ... except the author doesn't seem to realize that. We're supposed to empathise with them. I was rooting for the Brotherhood of the Sun, I wanted to smack Sookie Stackhouse upside the head and stake her little vampire friends out for the dawn.

I've also read the Dresden Files series - every single one, most of them multiple times. The vampires are serial killer rapist monsters, and we're not supposed to empathise with them. They are monsters and get put down like monsters. Even the White Court - who are succubus-type "sexy" vampires - are amoral, ever-thirsting undying monsters.

I've not seen the TV shows (True Blood, the Dresden Files) or the movie (Let The Right One In) associated with them ... True Blood is supposed to be good, but I got burned on Charlaine Harris and despise it by association. The Dresden Files tv series is supposed to be awful. And I didn't bother going to see Let The Right One In in theaters.

The husband downloaded the Sookie Stackhouse novels for me. I haven't read them. I did see seasons 1 and 2 of True Blood and, morbidly, I enjoyed it. Of course, I am sure the series was just adapted from the books. From what I gather, the Sookie of the novels is... well... an idiot. My best friend suggested I read the Southern Vampire novels. I think I'm glad, after I read several reviews, yours included, that I didn't bother buying the books.

These things are a matter of taste, but with all due respect to Tsaraine, the Southern Vampire books are (IMO) excellent. Sookie is not stupid and shows more independence in the books than she has so far in the TV series.

Eh not really, just use the same formula that Stephen Myers used in Twilight. I mean writing books like Twilight is just so ridiculously simple that even the infinite amount of monkeys typing on infinite amount of typewriters don't mess with that shit, it's too easy. They're still busy working on Shakespeare.

I can't say I've read the books myself, but I doubt I will. I'm currently reading a collection of werewolf short stories, which have so far been fairly entertaining. They do kind of ricochet around a bit, as some of them are more sympathetic, others are monsters.

But there's a story about intelligence services using werewolves during the Cold War to sniff out spies, which was pretty cool.

Would you mind giving me the title? That book sounds awesome.

As usual. Rarely, movies and series adapted from books are exactly like the sources. I thoroughly enjoyed "The Queen of the Damned" (the book) and I rue the day someone decided to adapt it to the big screen. The movie was a fiasco and did not resemble the book at all.
