Burqa specific legislation is silly, if they have a problem with concealment act on the concealment laws, don't treat it different just because it's religious attire. If they have a problem with oppression of women, treat the illness not the symptoms

I've never understood that. Women or men who are flabby or asymettrical or just plain odd-shaped, wearing revealing clothes or being naked has never struck me as anything more than embarassing. But you wouldn't ever catch me sneering or laughing at them.

But what I have never understood is the "problem" you talk about. Letting you see something you don't want to see, or dressing a body you regard as ugly in the trappings of a "sexy" body. I think it might be fetishism, frankly, as though naked is supposed to mean sexy, or there is some offence being committed (lying perhaps?) to dress a body you don't find sexy in the clothing you have come to expect should only be seen on sexy bodies.

Corrected. It is a very big difference.

This one is more true. There are different views of Islam and some Muslims I know don't believe their religion requires them to wear a burqa.

Actually, a lot of Muslims believe that Burqas/Niqabs are not necessary - up to and including the governments of Egypt, Syria and Saudia-Arabia, who recently banned them in public places.

aye I sometimes get the feeling people don't know that some Muslims drink and have perfectly normal lives, but generally its poor form to get into a scriptural debate with someone when it comes to have they have to practice their faith (or whatever the culture of modesty will still be relevant)

If he wants to have an offensive mural, good for him. I just hope he won't have a problem when others have offensive opinions about the man himself. Being offended is part of freedom of speech. If you have a problem with it, move to Iran. I hear it's pretty sunny.

A woman wearing a burqa does so to send every male she meet the following message:

"You are a pathetic bunch of flesh that control its sinful thoughts and would immediately rape me if you could gaze upon me. Yet since males are superior to females in the eyes of Allah the merciful I wear this shield, since if you would rape me or have lustful thoughts that would be my fault and I would not be allowed to blame you in any way"

I don't know about the Quaran, but the Qur'an has this to say on the matter:

"O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters, and the women of the faithful, to draw their wraps over them. They will thus be recognised and no harm will come to them. God is forgiving and kind."

And besides, there's nothing in the Bible that asks Christians to wear crosses around their neck, but you can bet your ass that people would complain if a nationwide ban on crosses was implemented.
