Playtime cancelled because of noise nuisance?

Postby Charlotte Ryberg » Fri Sep 17, 2010 11:25 am

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-yo ... e-11340226

Aside the cry of political correctness, the move is really killing off the chance to socialise and it can only mean that children will then end up spending free time on PSPs and DSes, even though most people are concerned about children being on computers and consoles for too long... so why cut outdoor playtime? I mean, if all schools started reducing or even banning playtime just because of "noise nuisance" enjoyment and socialising will suffer because children will then want to use the computer or console for every minute of their free time (and that reminds me of when pupils in my Year 5 class were attracted by any working Gameboy during the Pokémon craze of 1999/2000).

Any thoughts?

Deal with it.

Shouldn't these people be at work, anyhow?

The same garbage is happening with recess in elementary schools here in the US. Schools are getting rid of it because they're afraid of lawsuits if some parent's precious child happens to scrape their knee while playing.

Wow, just wow...

The fear of getting an abatement notice made them stop it preemptively?
At least wait and see before taking drastic measures. The play area didn't look altogether small, or crowded near to the homes (assuming thats an accurate picture), how bad could it have been?

Land value probably.

But yeah, this is sheer stupidity.

Children should be seen and not heard. Not the residents' fault that the school is full of faulty kids.

Wow, that's what happens when the so-called compensation culture starts getting out of hand.

I lived right next to a primary school and it never bothered me. Its inoffensive and barely audible inside the house, basically background noise. What could be theses people's problems, even if they work nights?

Jesus, people do love to make mountains out of molehills. What happened to the good old days when idiots who moved next to schools then complained about the noise were told to fuck off?
The kind of middle-class mentality which actuates both those responsible for strategy and government has little knowledge of the new psychology and organizing ability of the totalitarian States. The forces we are fighting are governed neither by the old strategy nor follow the old tactics.

I agree, this is pretty jacked up. However, I don't regard it as the school's fault, I regard it as the fault of the people who put legal pressure on the school to stop. Schools in the modern world are very vulnerable to the influence of the locals, especially the parents. They're easily pressured into certain policies if only a slight amount of political momentum, such as a lawsuit, is enacted. Kids should be allowed their outdoor recess time.

I'm no expert on elementary education, but being related to an elementary school teacher, I can say that this will present a problem in that it won't give young children an avenue to direct their energy. It will make them harder to control in school and will cause problems such as a greater inability to pay attention. The people living near the school should be made to deal with it. If they didn't want to hear the noise, noone forced them to move next to a school in the first place.

Compensation culture pretty much ran that out the door.

Children need this precious time to get those few valuable lessons that are better served learning earlier now rather than later. Plus Bullocks on the whole bit on "noise pollution", probably just some old bitter folks or may say a greater issue among the neighborhood in regards to people interacting...

Similar things have happened at the school at which I work. Apparently the fact that there's been a school on that site for 150 years was a revelation to our neighbours, who complain about the bells, the students and the PA system. :palm:

Thankfully our school has some balls and doesn't cancel our breaks for the sake of moronic neighbours.
If you can read this, thank your teachers.

1. Left wing does not equal communist.

2. The Left won't destroy Western civilization, but fear mongering such as your's is creating a climate where large-scale political violence is becoming increasingly likely.

3. Do you have any evidence that anyone involved in this was a Leftist? Religious conservatives are big on the unreasonable disciplining of children.

4. All Left-wingers are not the same. I voted Democrat in the 2008 election, my main complaints against Obama relate to him not being liberal enough, I support universal health care, public education, and the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell. And I also despise political correctness and think this decision sounds like garbage. I do not appreciate being steriotyped.
"Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes" When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy." - President Abraham Lincoln.

Wow, when did this thread about school recess being canceled turn into a debate on what left-wing means?

If I were the principal, my response to these complaints would be to organize outdoor choir groups during recess.
Or possibly equip all of the children with megaphones.
I AM DISAPPOINTED
