What If...

Postby Bavin » Thu May 14, 2009 7:08 pm

What if Archduke Franz Ferdinand wasn't assassinated?
What if he survived?
What if Austria backed down because of Russia's posturing and didn't invade Serbia in 1914?
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.- Carl Sagan

Well, Europe would be better off but the rest of the world might not be. Imagine if (say) Eden had the resources of an intact British Empire when he faced the Suez crisis. (No WWI equals no WW2 equals a much stronger Britain (not that that would be a bad thing))

But it would also mean a stronger Germany
I wouldn't say there would be no WWI. Europe was a powder keg in the 19teens. There was a naval buildup and an entangling web of alliances. The war might still of happened, but later, and with a differnet outcome.
I see what you mean about the rest of the world being worse off. The colonialism of Europe would last longer, and lead to more proxy wars between European powers in Asia and Africa.

I doubt germany would have won in the first place. It was a lost cause.

I'm seeing something between Willy and Georgie breaking out, possibly involving the African colonies or the Southwestern Pacific.

Dunno if that'd be true as of the 1950s. The British army especially was in a dreadful state in the mid-1930s, and without credible international foes I doubt we'd have built it up much again.
End the Modigarchy now.

It might even have prevented the Cold War, for some time. No WWI means the Romanovs might have held onto power, or peacefully transitioned to a democracy.

the assassination caused a chain effect of deceleration of wars. though on a bigger scale the world simply became to small for the European super powers to live on together. One simply had to go. Plans for the invasion of France were already made several years before WWI. However with Germany producing weapons in the extra time they are able to help modernize the Austrian forces creating another strong force. The powder keg bassicaly got filled more and more with a bigger boom waiting to happen with each passing day

Leaving aside the dubious claims above, no assassination of Archduke Ferdinand =/= no WW1. The assassination was an excuse for the war, not a cause of it.

What If...
In 2020, a coronavirus from China causes a global pandemic where every country in the world goes in lockdown, and the result causes the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.
Imagine that?! That would be CRAZY right?
