Postby Bavungria » Sat Sep 04, 2010 2:50 am

This will probably sound very stupid but i am going to ask it anyway. How would you define a liberal ? How would you define a conservative? whats the different policies and economic beliefs do they have ? Why are liberal associated as the left ? Also has anyone read liberal Fascism ? :P

People like to pigeonhole themselves, especially anybody who could be considered a liberal or conservative, so just ask them.

No, no one is so easy to classify.

For example, I'm from the hatred party, we hate everyone and every concept.

liberals and conservatives are people who adhere to their respective ideology you really should of asked the dictionary tbh:
-liberals want more freedom (anyone who says economic regulation is getting hit with the stick)
-conservatives are traditionalists

I did see it in a bookshop in the US and laughed

thats an archaic definition from back when people were ruled by unenlightened monarchs. That'd be considered a libertarian.

A "liberal" is better described as a "progressive" that wants to go forward without the influence of tradition in their decision making. Modern liberals have no qualms about restricting personal or economic freedom, look at Sweden.

its a book. nvm that question.

Those two things can't go together. It's like Anarchy...and free will!

I've lurked around these forums for a while now. I just thought I would throw in my two cents on this.

While I have not read the actual book, my understanding is that the title "Liberal Fascism" is purposefully an oxymoron. One supposes that this serves a dual purpose -- it is a good marketing device and it underline's the author's main thesis.

The book itself, from the summaries I have read, is not pointing out that liberals and progressives are goosestepping Nazis or anything of that sort (the book does note the often overlooked point that there are fundamental differences between Fascism and Nazism). To the contrary, the author points out that such tendencies are unlikely on either side of the political aisle due to fundamental American conceptions of government and that neither side is really at liberty to call the other "fascist" in any real sense. Instead, the book examines the historical tendency of some on the political left to apply the label of "fascist" to anyone with whom they happen to disagree. It goes on to point out that in terms of the actual economic and social programs advocated by the fascists, there has been far more similarity with the left in this country than with the right.

I think that the author actually defends himself rather well -- you can read his defense at http://nrd.nationalreview.com/article/? ... M4ZTc5OGQ= .

I should point out, since none of you know me, that I am not saying I actually agree with the book or its author. The main reason I have not read it myself is that I've dismissed it for quite some time but having actually read a few defenses I find the premise somewhat interesting. I think the key is not to dismiss ideas and concepts in a knee jerk fashion and instead consider what is said on its own merits regardless of our own initial emotional reactions.

I guess. I don't know. Something along those lines. My friend says that I should call myself a progressive. I agree with most of what he says so I might be that. I vote democrat a whole lot. Green sometimes. I think I voted for a Republican once but I don't think that guy knew that he wasn't republican. Mostly I'm your worst nightmare. You'll find me when you least expect. In a blind alley. Under cover of darkness. Well, actually, if you find yourself in the dark in a blind alley, expect me. Thats where I hang out. If you bring donuts, I'll bring coffee.
