well, they do reckon that it'll take a couple of years to finish up the rebuilding.

half the lesson here is that it pays to be prepared. building codes took it into account, insurance included a levy to pay for just such an event (so the government had the money pre-allocated) and there were at least rough outlines of plans ahead of time of who needed to do what if it happened. (also, earthquake drill is basic primary school stuff here :D)

and... they estimate 4 billion of damage currently. that is, admitedly, NZ dollars... so closer to 3 billion US. but still.

also, the USA is bigger so *shrugs*

What about an army of pedophiles storming the theoretical gates to capture the young Kiwi's to hold as political prisoners and sex slaves until ransom and substancial rape has been collected and performed?

If you have that, then i shall scream to the heavens that NZ is now my favorite nation.

... We haven't had one of those this week. It got postponed for the post-zombie apocalypse day drill. We had to go and storm the local gunshop and barracade it. Shit was so cash.

While I sympathize with the people of NZ, I'm a appalled that this is a sticky thread and the Pakistan relief thread is not.

Actually, this was stickied temporarily so that our NZ users could check in and we wouldn't get a bajillion threads all on the same subject. It's something we've taken to doing for major disasters and such.

And I do believe this has served it's purpose, so.... *destick!*

I should note, regarding Angermanland's statement of some pages back - Lyttleton Harbour is built in an *extinct* volcanic crater, not a *dormant* one. Both our local volcanoes are very much dead. :)

It's odd how some areas are very badly damaged but others are not; Kaiapoi got trashed, but nearby Rangiora escaped harm ... my house is entirely unaffected, but just across the river there are portaloos lined up along the footpath because the sewage is out. Earthquakes are weird.

I haven't really kept up with the news at all, but I'm still waiting to hear back from someone who's on here every now and again...any death reports?

There's been one sort-of-related death; someone had a heart attack. Can't recall/can't be arsed finding the source right now though. Two people were seriously injured, one by having a chimney fall on him, and one by being cut by falling glass. I believe they're still alive, but I haven't followed that up.

We were offered aid, by both the US military and the UN, but it was turned down, presumably on the grounds of being able to handle it ourselves.

And if that's not a reputable source, I also read similar news in a fairly competent local newspaper a few days back.

Laugh all you like, Wellington's rugged geography is caused by the fact that it's where the Indo-Australian and Pacific plates change from sliding past each other to subduction of one plate under the other (I forget which is which). Which means that one day your (quite lovely and pleasant, except for the weather) city is going to slide into Wellington Harbour. :)

only if they reclassified it again in the last couple of years.
it was listed as extinct, but then something was changed about how they measured it and they reassessed a whole bunch... it was one of many changed from 'extinct' to 'dormant' as a result.

this was years ago, mind you, so the details are somewhat hazy in my memory.

actually, the Christchurch one was only 7.1, apparently. but the numbers got updated so many times in rapid succession that it's not surprising a lot of people lost track.
