Why?

Because NZ is capable of handling this situation. US tax money is better spent on other things.

I think NZ can handle it...no fatalities fontunately.

-Workers' Republic - anarcho-syndicalist commune

Yeah. It's true. But Tax money is never really spent on what it needs to be. I believe if we did need money we'd go to Aus first.

such as paying off massive debts :D

yeah, i agree with you on this one.

I just hope the government here doesn't then try and use the expenditure required to sort out the mess to justify selling off assets to foreign interests (which was the current major issue of the day pre-quake. this government got elected almost entirely on the basis of the previous one, in various forms, having been in for 9 years (3 terms) and promising NOT sell off assets. of course, the assets in question are slightly different, but the explanation is too long for a thread about something else and i'm sure i've forgotten half the details)

By those arguments, is it not God's miracle that there were much less causalities than in other earthquakes? It could have been much worse.

Indeed. New Zealand is, as a country, in a very silly place. volcanoes and fault lines are closer to the rule than the exception. earth quakes and such are a part of the natural process of the world in such areas. the lack of casualties is astounding. now, a lot of that Could be claimed to be due to human actions, such as the building codes and things, but the shear number of 'near miss' stories that amount to 'if i had woken up a half second later I'd be dead' is... easily described as miraculous. likewise timing.

all the above said... aftershocks are getting old >:(

"Offer to New World Kaiapoi Staff Announcement – Thursday 9 September 10.00 PM
New World in Kaiapoi, the township worst hit by the earthquake, announced today that the store will close, with the loss of 86 jobs. The Warehouse would like to offer any of the 86 employees affected, to apply to The Warehouse for Christmas roles via our Careers website (www.thewarehousecareers.co.nz), stating clearly that they are New World Kaiapoi staff. We give a guarantee to these people that we will fast-track their application and give them priority for any roles they are able to do in our stores across Christchurch. There will be dependencies on mobility, and roles and hours available, but we would like tonight to extend this offer to do our very best to help, by offering work where ever we can, at least through to Christmas."
From The Warehouse. Thats really good that they are going that. It's hard for the warehouse to get extra staff in and for them to offer priority like that is just great.

Christchurch NZ hit by major quake

Postby Chanrian Ruh » Thu Sep 09, 2010 2:21 pm

Quite a lot of people from Auckland have gone down to help out with extra reconstruction and things, I'm going down tomorrow along with a big bunch of builders, so New Zealand should be right as rain pretty quick.

Us kiwis are tough as nails. No need to worry! :D

If it happened in America, it would take five years, millions upon millions upon millions of dollars, and an international plea for help...

Is it just me, or is their some hidden message in all of this?
