Just curious as to what NSG thinks on the subject. Do you smoke? If so, what? How often do you smoke? How did you start, are you addicted?

Personally, I only started smoking this year. I do it for arguably shallow reasons; because it's social, and because it makes me look and feel cool, thus raising my self-esteem. I only smoke when I'm out drinking with people, so a couple of times a week tops. I'm not addicted. I smoke cigarettes, although I'd like to give cigars and little cigars a try.

Actually, there was an article sometime back that a small percentage of the population (0.5% ?) do not become addicted to smoking, because of something to do with their brain's neuroreceptors. I don't remember the entire detail.

I totally agree. Some people just don't get addicted. So, smoking for them is a personal choice not because of an addiction.

Used to smoke cigarettes, never got truly addicted. Sometimes wouldn't for weeks other weeks it'd be a pack a day. Kicking cigarette was a lot easier though i'm guessing because i still mixed tobacco with my joints. That was purely economics and the British way. Not anymore

One half of one percent? You're betting on being one in 1.5 million in the US? Or one in 30 million for the world? If you like those kind of odds, give up the cigs and buy lottery tickets with the money.

Not necessarily. I did the same thing as OP not long ago. It was all of about 9 months before I got bored of the fact that nicotine gave me no kind of buzz at all. Dropped smoking just like that.

There's much more potent things to spend ones money on.

-My friend asked me to finish off one of his cigars at a party, and I was kind of drunk so I did. I know, not the coolest or most rational way to start smoking, but eh, that's how it happened.

Are you kidding me? Having personally experienced not being addicted and just reading others' posts who have not been addicted, I would say it is more common than you think. Maybe most people who claim their really addicted are actually not and just use it as an excuse because they would rather not quit. You never know.

I'm an extremely casual smoker. I sometimes carry cigarettes around with me when I'm out (Marlboro's. I'm willing to pay a bit more for quality) or at the pub, and generally smoke if other people around me are doing the same. However if I'm not doing sometihng, or just can't be fucked to go out into the cold I don't smoke and don't get cravings.

On top of that, I sometimes get some cigars when I'm celebrating something.

I do not smoke. I saw my mother get sick all the time because of her smoking. Personal choice, if someone wants to smoke, that's their business.

The way I see it, the price of a pack of cigs just doesn't justify the product. 5 pound for a box of dried leaves wrapped in paper that have no effect but to mess around with your taste buds for a while?

As far as I'm concerned, if you're going to insist on purchasing narcotics, you may as well go illegal. It's the only way to get your money's worth.
