Most Pivotal Year in History

Postby Serrland » Fri Aug 27, 2010 7:44 pm

The course of recorded history, which might be a redundant term, has had many pivotal years that still resonate today. The destruction of Carthage in 146 BC, the crucifixion of Christ in ~32, the sack of Rome by Alaric and his horde in 410, the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the voyage of Columbus in 1492, and the list goes on and on.

Well, NSG, which year do you think has been the most pivotal and consequential year in human history?

All suggestions pale in comparison to the birth of human civilisation. I bite my thumb.

I'm with Bismarck in thinking the fact that North America speaks English is pretty pivotal, I've not idea of the year I'd attribute it to.

I would throw 1945 out there, too, notably the detonation of the nuclear bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The political implications shaped diplomacy (and continue to do so) and the scientific implications are still being discovered.

It's a Wikipedia day for me it seems, I didn't realise why 'the best thing since sliced bread' was a phrase..

1928

Can't seem to find individually wrapped cheese slice history per se,

1848. I guess this is a Euro-centric way to look at history, but the next 100 years were determined with the revolutions and upheaval that came with that year. In terms of world history, it is pretty hard to say when the most important "stuff" happened.

I'd say the Liberal Revolutions had pretty long reaching influences around the world. I guess one could say that Marxism grew out of them ( Communist Manifesto published in 48). I would say that it's not at all Euro-centric, as Marxism is about as global in scope as an ideology gets.

The Crucifixtion, the Columbian Exchange, and Apollo 11 come immediately to mind.

Other events that might count would the development of agriculture (could be subdivided a lot; human planting, domestication, the plow, irrigation), the American Revolution, the printing press, the 95 theses, the Pax Romana, and the unification of China. Of course, some of those would be quite hard to date.

May 18, 1804, when Napoleon proved that anybody with a big enough army can be Emperor. The concept of divine right went RIGHT out the window.

1789, the year the French Revolution began, the storming of the Bastille and the revolutionary teachings of philosophers like Voltaire shook the old world to its core.
