Environmentalism and the Environment

Postby JJ Place » Sun Aug 22, 2010 10:42 pm

I was watching a few videos today about Environmentalism, each created across the board by different organizations and groups, and it got me thinking once again about the issue; What do you think about Environmentalism? The groups, the activists, the organizations, what do you think about Environmentalism and the Environmental Movement? More broadly, what do you think about the environment, and the conservation and protection of said environmental, and all of the factors that play into the environment?

Your thoughts, NS?

Most of the movement seems without clout if they don't have willing EPA intermingling.

I like the environment. I keep all my stuff there. :)

I know. That was just kind of an afterthought. Kind of like when you rant about gas prices and finish by saying "damn, I hate black people".

environmentalism is one of the more astonishingly effective political movements we've ever had. sure, we're pretty seriously fucked on the climate change front, but then again we were well on the way decades before anybody connected the dots at all. but the rivers don't actually catch fire anymore in the developed world.

QFT. The movement is all about showing off and seldom benefits the cause.

I'm pro-environment but anti-environmentalist, if that makes sense. I hate a lot of the factions within the movement, and I think a lot of the noiser groups are just ignorant as all hell, but I hope the people who actually know what they're doing (scientists) make decent progress.

I really don't care :P I'm not going to make a big deal out of it. Hopefully the people who I do not report will pay it forward and the people THEY pay it forward to will pay it forward and so on and so forth until eventually my warning level drop below ten. Just my way of helping the world.

I'd agree with you it's an incredibly astonishing political movement; but we must ask ourselves: Is the movement moving us in the right direction, moving us in the wrong direction, or moving us almost no-where? Myself, I say a combination of all three. As for Climate Change, I'm not so certain Climate Change is anywhere near as bad or nearly as large an extensive a problem as many proclaim; nor do I say it's a good idea to proclaim Climate Change to be so terrible. There are an extensive amount of problems with the environment, and a number of environmental issues and problems that need to be addressed, but Climate Change, while the most prominently seen environmental issue in the world today, might be one of smallest concerns in the world.

I think environmentalism is important, and says important things, but it's message is very in coherent in a world where ideologies are melted down into sentences.

I also think many environmentalists are too uncompromising.

It makes perfect sense that you can be pro-environment but anti-environmentalist; environmentalists are not the only ones who care about the planet. That true care for the planet is... questionable amongst some 'environmentalists', especially a few prominent environmentalists; there goals might be different than helping the environment.

I think the world has bigger problems than the environment. And as long as money is an issue, both to implement policies and procedures as well as damage to the economy, the money will always end up getting priority eventually. Besides, some of the worlds' worst polluting nations aren't even remotely interested in the environmental impact they're creating in the race to catch up to the US economically. Don't get me wrong, people shouldn't be careless with their environmental related choices. But you don't have to break your back and change your way of life just because you're worried about your "carbon footprint". The whole CO2 issue is the biggest load of crap the enviro-mob actually fooled people into taking a bite of. There is so much more harmful stuff being thrown into the air by dirty industries and even by natural events like volcano eruptions that even a massive change for the green on your part is insignificant. Nobody should be pressuring you to go buy one of those clown cars that look like they've got a weed-whacker engine in them, solar panels for your roof, or anything like that. Beware of ANYONE who has an ideology and something to sell you! All that people should be doing is things like don't dump your motor oil or waste chemicals on the ground or down a storm drain, find ways to re-use items in your own home when possible instead of throwing them away, and turn crap off when you're not using it. The latter two also save you money, so it's a matter of good stewardship on your part. Don't give in to enviro-mob mentality - just do the simple things that make good sense to any reasonable person.

right direction, obviously. this doesn't even seem like a debatable point to me. what possible reasoning could be offered otherwise?

and climate change is the big problem to address from any reasonable perspective. what it doesn't destroy on its own, it combines with already existing problems to make them much much worse. this is the inescapable conclusion you get from the science (provided you care about either the continued existence of a vibrant biotic community on earth, or just like living under the conditions under which our civilization is possible, of course).
