Posthumanism

Postby New Heliopolis » Wed Jul 08, 2009 6:30 pm

Basically, this idea:

"Posthumanism mainly differentiates from classical humanism in that it restores the stature that had been made of humanity to one of many natural species. According to this claim, humans have no inherent rights to destroy nature or set themselves above it in ethical considerations a priori. Human knowledge is also reduced to a less controlling position, previously seen as the defining aspect of the world. The limitations and fallibility of human intelligence are confessed, even though it does not imply abandoning the rational tradition of humanism.'

I, for one, am a post-humanist, but I'm curious as to your own thoughts. Care to share?
Excellent Quotes:
JJ Place wrote: just because an organization tells you that them taking money from you isn't theft because they have more rights than any other organization is one of the lamest arguments a person can utilize in a debate; saying that the government can do what it likes because it writes it's own law is intellectually dishonest, and flies in the face of all reality.

This might be a good philosophy to be adopted by all those posthumans that will be created by the artificial sperm we heard about yesterday.

Otherwise, i intend to maintain my place in the food chain.

I define as a transhumanist, in terms of philosophical beliefs about humanities future. Humanity is a transitional species, and through developing our intellect we will guide our own evolution and become something better. That's my beliefs in a nutshell, and I'm not really sure how to expand on that in this thread without some direction.

I disdain any labels that end in -ism, especially if they have prefixes.

I guess this makes me an antilabelist.

I have to agree. My first thought was "PETA Humanism."

We certainly shouldn't go destroying nature "because we can." That's juvenile.

What other knowledge is there besides "human knowledge"? And how would it not legitimately be the "defining aspect of the world"? Until another sentient species on the earth is revealed, who else is there?

I'm happy to confess the limitations and fallibility of human intelligence, while pointing out that we're getting better at figuring out the world all the time.

This strikes me as New Age "One With The World, We Are Insignificant" bullshit.

Of course not. We antilabelists don't follow anything.

Nature's had the planet for what, 5 billion years? It's our turn now!
The kind of middle-class mentality which actuates both those responsible for strategy and government has little knowledge of the new psychology and organizing ability of the totalitarian States. The forces we are fighting are governed neither by the old strategy nor follow the old tactics.

Fuck nature. Let's scour the face off the planet with nuclear weapons and have our turn.

Post Humanism is garbage in every sense of the word. We evolved to highest level on the food chain, and until something else comes along thats smart enough to replace that, we will stay there.

That's still nature at work. Human nature, but nature still.
