Favorite Western Philosopher

Postby Greed and Death » Wed Jul 08, 2009 5:32 am

What is your favorite Western Philosopher and why? I didn't make a poll as there are too many to list fairly.

My personal favorite is Nietzsche. I didn't like him until recently however as those annoying goth kids gave him bad associations. the manner in which he avoids the trap or morality.

i will admit i haven't read a lot of western philosophy but most of what i have read is bunk, but if i had to pick one i would choose one i haven't even read which would be locke, because as i understand it he was a major influence on the founders of America, and the way they designed the government.

Machiavelli and Plato, although I have always pondered the seriousness of The Prince. I think Machiavelli wrote it just so he could get his old job back from the Medici's, because the Discourse on Livy seems to be quite serious and a contrast to The Prince.

If you're from United States like me, I'd do the ol' blame the failing and crumbling educational system of the United States, and just Google it.

I think Google is becoming a far superior in teaching young minds opposed to schools--if we're talking the United States.

And don't think I'm anti-American or anything, I'm a die-hard patriotic type.

As for Western Philosophy, I have to give Socrates and Plato the credit where credit is due, they'll always be high up there--I especially like Socrates' quote, along the lines of "As for me, all I know is that I know nothing." Translation issues are present, but it's always been one of those quotes I find rather interesting.

However, Protagoras is definately my favorite. His relatistic ideologies and agnostic beliefs always gave me interest, and I've always been fond of the agnostics.
Part of me grew up here. But part of growing up is leaving parts of ourselves behind.

Interestingly, my education in Texas had a strong background in philosophy (1 year required, 2nd year encouraged), though that might have just been my school.

I always hesitate to say Socrates. Just because he never wrote anything, it is really just Plato and Xenophon, we just assume the earlier works are directly Socrates.

I think I like Kant. If I could understand him. Otherwise, Plato's okay, though in temperment I think I'm more an Epicurean.

I don't think so. I'm told I misunderstand him, but nobody's been able to actually tell me how and why. And the way I do understand it is some weird mix of insanity and malicious intent to destroy human beings.

The vanity and presumption of governing beyond the grave is the most ridiculous and insolent of all tyrannies. Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Adam Smith, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, The Enlightenment in general...

They formed the basis of many of the Philosophical and Moral standpoints the Western world is supposed to be about today...

I don't think I exactly understand him but I think he is trying to apply morality to a secular post enlightenment world.

Ludwig Wittgenstein tops the chart for me.
It surprises me that no one has mentioned him yet.
But remember that the Captain belongs to the most dangerous enemy of truth and freedom, the solid unmoving cattle of the majority.
Oh, God, the terrible tyranny of the majority.
