If this were my kid ....

Postby Anti-Social Darwinism » Tue Jul 07, 2009 8:47 pm

Who here (other than Ruffy) got a car/truck for his/her sixteenth birthday? Who here cared what it looked like as long as it ran?

I got my first car when I was 30, and not from my parents - who could barely afford to keep us fed and sheltered. My kids both bought their first cars after they were on their own.

Oh, I got two cars, both brand new (Well, the first one was technically used, but 250 miles doesn't really count) at no personal cost.

This kid's still a brat.

You know, when I turned 16, my father allowed me to *use* his '72 Buick Skylark to drive around. It wasn't mine, but he let me use it. The thing was a piece of shit, and I was happy to have it because it had 4 wheels and an engine (a nice engine, too).

They shouldn't try to give him another car--or let him use either of theirs. The freakin' brat has to learn not everything in life is exactly how he wants it. Heck, he should be thankful his parents were even able to afford that truck in the first place.

Only watched a second or two of the video, but I noticed the cars the family had in the driveway--a nice-looking truck and Hummer. Looked like they expected his reaction, too.

What a freakin' douchebag. If it were my kid, he wouldn't be getting anything for any other holiday/birthday, clearly it wouldn't be worth me getting him anything not strictly necessary.

If I were his dad, I would have grabbed a bat too. It's fun to beat up a vehicle with bats and sticks and bricks. But that is all the kid would have to drive after that. He could either pay to get it fixed or save money to buy a new one. I would give him a few bus schedules on his next birthday.

I just watched where the father told him (repeatedly) not to hit the truck. The child hit the truck, and that father stood idly by. No surprise why the kid is such a spoiled brat.

I was "allowed" to buy a 15-year old truck when I turned 18, and only after I'd saved up the $5000 cash for it.

His parents are the ones who need a right proper beating -- for raising such a spoilt child.

No one should buy their child an automobile. Where I live, most university students in their early to mid-twenties ride the train or the bus. For that matter, so do many of the engineers where I work.

Okay, watched the whole video. Totally staged. If it wasn't, his dad would have grabbed him when he was close and had the bat at his side. And if it wasn't and the kid wanted to do some damage, he would have started with the windows--easiest and most satisfying parts to smash.

I don't think it was staged, the kid was an idiot, and I think when he approached the truck he wasn't sure he was gonna hit it.

Have you seen the other video of his World of Warcraft freakout? Threw a tantrum because his mom cancelled his account.

Definitely a case of given WAY too much.

I saw that video. Also unbelievably staged.

I was wondering about that too. Smash the windows! Smash 'em! Smash 'em!

I haven't actually seen anything past the pickup, but really... couldn't he just paint it? I can understand not wanting to drive around in a graffiti'd car, but if it got another coat - even done shoddily - it would look fine.

I think he wasn't sure how to start, but it was totally planned. When the kid makes like he's gonna hit the dad with the bat, you can hear the mom laughing off-camera.

My parents bought me a brand new Hyundai Accent as a grad present making me pay the monthly payents $400 a month. I managed to do so, plus $250 a month in Insurance (New Driver, From British Columbia we have wierd licence rules) and was happier than a pig in sh*t.

I then decided to trade in my car in march for a 1999 F-150 Triton V-8. I also recieved $1000 in addition to the truck totall payed off.

I had the truck 8 days before I rolled it 6 times and wrote it off. The insurance on it was bare minimum (Just so it was road legal), so they wouldnt replace it. It was a very nice truck. The point to all this is, I would be so happy if I got the car for free I wouldnt care what it looked like, that could always be fixed later...

I bought my own car when I was 15, it was a 5 speed over 10 years older than I was and it burned more oil than it did gas.

I was happy to have it.

My kids wouldn't make it that far in life if they acted like that.

I don't think I got a birthday present when I was 16. Actually I lately, I've just told my folks to stop buying me things altogether and just donate some money to my next crazy venture.

My first car I bought and payed for on my on dime; insurance, maintenance, fuel all of it. Then I bought a second vehicle and same goes for this one. I sold my first to some friends who had never owned anything like a car for a reasonable price. I think their last big purchase together was a Wii. They nearly shat themselves when an advertising mechanic told them it needed nearly a thousand dollars in work to pass the inspection. I told them welcome to the wonderful world of automobile investment and then gave the number to my mechanic who could the work for less than half the cost.

I got a crappy, PoS Saturn SL2 that is currently falling apart, but the only thing I was upset about was it didn't have a CD player. Other then that, I was happy with it. Hey, it runs and the millage isn't bad.

I wouldn't support a kid getting a car from his parents even if they could afford to buy him a brand new Mercedes. Let the kid get his own car.

I didn't get my first car until I was almost 33, and that's because my grandmother had a stroke and could no longer drive hers. The car's an old POS, but it's my old POS, dammit!
