I think I'm in a rather good position to say so, since I've been a semi-regular user of the site since a few years before it had a big, bad reputation. When I first started visiting the site, my thought process was something along the lines of, "I'm bored, I'll go on there and see if there's anything funny" - and there almost always was. In the early days, I stuck to /b/ and the more "mainstream" pornography boards, but as I grew up a bit, I broadened my horizons and made a discovery: there is such a diversity in both the content and the userbase of that site that it's simply impossible to make generalisations about all users of the site based on your distorted perception of one board. To tell the truth, you'd be hard-pressed to generalise about the users of one board (unless you say something like "the vast majority of people on /tg/ are interested in traditional games", but that's cheating). Honestly, /b/ as it is today is a bunch of mindless shit that isn't fun, and mediocre porn. The rest of the site ranges from /b/ with a weak subject filter (think /v/, /a/, etc.), to boards that you can actually have genuine, thought-provoking discussions on. Spend some time on /sci/, /r9k/ or /int/, among a few others, and I can guarantee you'll learn something. In the end, the advice I have for you is this: you can't judge a book by its cover - especially when the book's cover has been made by people who heard second-hand about one of the chapters of the book.
By the way, read this.

So....why do people talk about the pornography there if, as the site rules state, pornography should not be posted there?

Those rules were for /b/ if you actually took the time to read it. Of course they too erroneously misused 4chan. Plenty of boards are explicitly for 'adult content'.

4chan is many things to many people. To Faux News, 4chan is a hazardous "Leftist Internet Hate Machine" filled with domestic terrorists. To others, it is that site full of weeaboos, trolls, and pedophiles that churns out many of the Internet's most popular viral content. 4chan and Anonymous are defenders of the Internets, and offenders of everything else.
At its core, 4chan is an anonymous Japanimation-themed collection of image boards based on the popular Japanese site 2ch.jp. 4chan is proof positive that the United States should not have stopped with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but should have nuked the entire island of Japan off the face of the Earth. The site is home to a wide assortment of degenerate losers, all of whom have at least some variant of social anxiety disorder.
