Is “Grammar Nazi” PC?

Postby Curious Inquiry » Tue Jul 07, 2009 1:02 pm

“Grammar Nazi:
Someone who believes it's their duty to attempt to correct any grammar and/or spelling mistakes they observe.” – Urban Dictionary

I’m not asking for opinions about “grammar Nazis.” I’m a “grammar Nazi.” Rather, I wonder if the term, “grammar Nazi,” is itself politically correct? Would “grammar cop” or “grammar police” be less inflammatory?

Who cares?

I suppose it's a meme of sorts. Bastardization of the soup nazi I expect.

I suppose it depends on how far you take the metaphor. If I said, after you corrected a particularly egregious post's grammar, "Wow, Curious Inquiry, you certainly gassed those grammar Jews!" then yes, that would not be politically correct. To say the least. Just saying "grammar Nazi" is probably okay, though.

An insult to the Nazi.
There is a line most people say they will never cross. It is usually something they have done long ago when they thought no one was watching.

Political Correctness is dumb. If you want to go back to 1949 and live in 1984 then go right ahead an be PC but it used to be that "retarded" was a medical term and perfectly acceptable but then the stigma got attached and then the retarded became "special" but soon that became stigmatized too so on and so on. As far as I'm concerned I'm a cripple not a "differently abled individual with special needs" firstly because it rolls of the tongue a lot easier and secondly because whatever you call me little kids still gawk and ask their parents why I walk funny.

Let's not derail the thread on the first page with a discussion about how political correctness is a pox on humanity's collectively rotund posterior. It would make for a good discussion though in another thread. :)

folk who object to "grammar nazi" are either overly sensitive, have too much time on their hands and need something to whine about, or both.

There's a trend where I live to call people "nazi".......like for example they call me the "crumb nazi" it's really hurtful. :(

I don't know where it came about that calling people "nazi" was acceptable in polite company.

Thanks Ted. You stay classy, San Diego. I'm Ron Burgundy, and remember kids, rim job safely.

Ron you can't say 'rim job' on television.

Why not? You can say rim and job, so putting them together couldnt make it worse.

Well, OK. But its still not hurtfull. I hate how everyone's soft these days. Everyone's always wining about being politcally correct, or if they got their feelings hurt, or just blah!

Or George Carlin's example: on the radio, you can say "I pricked my finger, but not..." I don't know, actually. He was on the radio, so they bleeped it out. Hmm. I wonder what it was.

I'm close to the National Socialist ideology myself (the main difference being that I'm economic right,) and the term "Nazi" is considered to be a bit of a slur among National Socialists. I don't use the term "Nazi" myself because I'm aware of this and consider myself close to the ideology, but I'm still not bothered by others using the term.
