Ideal vacation?

Postby Yenke-Bin » Tue Jul 07, 2009 12:12 pm

It's summer time. School's are let out. The sun is shinning bright above. People begin to take to the roads to take a vacation. Of course, in these current times, vacations run shorter, and often end up going only a few miles down the road from home. This thread is an attempt to get away from the economic distress vacation, and discuss where our reasonably ideal vacation trips would be. By reasonable, I don't mean "OMG I want to go all over the world to every nude beach and historical site !!!11one!. Just say you have saved up a good portion of money that allows you to be gone for a week or two from your job. Where would you go? What would you see? Would it be a solo trip, or would you bring a friend or loved one?

For me, I think that OMG I want to go all over the world to every nude beach and historical site !!!11one!...

Just kidding. I would like to go on a trip visiting historical battlefields and sites across the eastern US. If not that, then I think a trip to Turkey and Lebanon would be fantastic. I would, of course, take my wonderful girlfriend with me. She and I both love history, so it would be a great trip for both of us. If in the US, I would specifically want to see Civil War battle sites, hopefully to see historical re-enactments. :D

If I were to go to Turkey and Lebanon, I would go visit ancient Christian sites in this area, where the Church first sprung up. I think it would interesting, and definitely less crowded than going to some place like Israel.

Well, for one, I do have such plans for sometime next year. I'm turning 30, and I want to implement my childhood dream.

It is, of course, about going on a Grand Tour. But nothing as ambitions as around the whole world, though. Just a car trip around the country, and pay a visit to our two neighbors, that's it. But a thorough one. Coast to coast, North to South. I'll have to use up all my paid leave, and negotiate an unpaid one by any means. See everything I've ever wanted to see, visit every major city, every big point.
Already got just the car for the job, although I'll spend the next few months bringing it back into a running condition, as I couldn't afford a working one. But then it's going to be the time of my life.

As for whom to take with me, I intend to go along with my s.o. for the first couple week, and hopefully with a couple friends so they can tow the PWC and perhaps a trailer along. None have the dedication to take an unpaid vacation for that, though, so I'll either have to coordinate it with other friends to join me, or just plain go on alone.
Really, a Grand Tour is the kind of journey everyone has to take on his own. But I'll have plenty of time to drive alone anyway, so I feel like joining up with some people early on, there are cities you're better off in with a company. Either way, that's my perfect trip of a lifetime.
There is a line most people say they will never cross. It is usually something they have done long ago when they thought no one was watching.

Hey guys, I'm doing it wrong. A vacation for me would entail; quitting traveling, getting a job, maybe find a place to live other than my truck or somebody's couch. As it stands, I'm currently in Inuvik, NWT, Canada (as far north as one can drive in Canada) waiting for a new steady bearing for my truck so I can travel south again. Which is why I've been back on NS. :)

I got pretty close to my ideal last summer: hiking in the mountains of China and Pakistan for a few weeks. I like mountains. :)

My ideal vacation would involve a couple of months in Europe. There are a couple of places I would very much like to visit and some that I would sort of like to visit and could do so if I had enough time.

Failing that, if I could just go to Spain and paricipate in la Tomatina and see some sights, that would be a good vacation. Either that or going to Morocco, to the edge of the Sahara and renting a guide and some camels for a couple of days to go into the desert.

I just came off a lengthy camping trip, a week in Yosemite ending with an excursion up to Lake Tahoe, and that was relatively awesome.

Another great time I had was when I decided to go from Michigan to California detouring by the northern route to Washington and Oregon, and found a lot of interesting sites in the South Dakota / Wyoming / Montana juncture. There is difficult rock-hiking terrain in the Badlands, if that's your kind of thing. Then I saw Mt. Rushmore, which is pretty impressive, and the Crazy Horse sculpture down the road, which is all the more impressive for still being a work-in-progress, and has a cultural center where they show the kind of things the Dakota tribes actually made, and also the beadwork "fancies" which they used to make for tourists in the 20's and so on (nothing like the real stuff, but interesting in its own way). I actually discovered the Buffalo Prairie where they are reviving the native grasses and animals: a sign on the road said "Bison are dangerous! Do Not Approach" which made me laugh (I was thinking "Yeah right, good advice if I ever see any bison") and then I came over the ridge and there was a huge herd, more of them than I thought existed (probably more than did exist when I was young). I dipped into Wyoming for the Devil's Tower, and up to Montana to take in the Custer Battlefield before going on to a friend in Missoula (all the way across the state). If I'd been intending to make that my vacation area, of course I would have planned to go on to Yellowstone and/or Glacier Park.

a free ticket to anywhere and free places to stay wherever i end up for the day or night or week.
food too of course, so i could just randomly wander around without having to worry about anything.
i mean the main thing to me, that would make a vacation a vacation is the not having to worry about anything part of it.

some kind of two or three month transportation pass, and enough saved up in advance to cover it.

for places and things, i'd say mountains and riding trains.
taking lots of pictures of them, movies and so on.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.
