Interstellar and Intergalactic Space Travel

Postby New Central Europe » Tue Jul 07, 2009 11:22 am

So, here's the questions.
What do you think? Is it possible? Can we do it? Can we do it now
Answer these and more, and give your opinion.
The fate of the human race (maybe) in your hands

Hell no. To leave the solar system we would need FTL travell wich is physically impossible. Maybe we can colonize mars and maybe a couple of moons orbiting Sauturn or Jupiter, but theres no way we're leaving the solar system.

"What do you think?"

About sex most of the time.

"Is it possible?"

I think so, on some level.

"Can we do it?"

I think so, to some degree.

"Can we do it now"

Well, we already do send people to travel through space. So, yes, but if you're talking about travel between planets and solar systems, I don't think so - not just yet.

We need warp drive.

Was it really necessary to use the spoilers? :palm:

Conceivably, it could be possible. We have theoretical physicists pondering it now. They're not promising anything, just pondering. Maybe we'll find a way to break the speed of light after all, and maybe we'll just find a way to circumvent it. I don't have enough information to say either way, so I'll make my official answer that I would like it to be possible.

So, why would the fate of the human race be in my hands? I'm afraid I don't quite understand the question.

Uhm. The Voyager probe is about to leave the solar system. It does not have FTL though.

EDIT: The only problem with "conventional" (such as nuclear) propulsion is that it would take very long to reach the next habitable planet. But "very long" does not necessarily mean "too long" and besides, do we even need to reach said next planet? Space habitats are cool enough in themselves.

It's quite possible to travel For The Lulz, I assure thou.

Makes no sense though until we colonize at least 5% of Earth.

Ok, why don't you re-write the laws of physics and I'll get NASA funding for us?

Yes, we can do interstellar and intergalactic travel now. The downside is that it takes a really long time to get there.

We wouldn't know absolute truth if it bit us in the ass. I don't accept that there's no way for us to exceed the speed of light, and I hope they keep researching ways to get around that law until either A) they figure it out or B) the earth is destroyed.

Build a big enough Generation ship with a decent enough drive and devise cryogenics that work and you can go wherever you want.

Sure, it might take a few thousand years, but so what?

I don't think wormhole travel has been entirely discarded yet. Not sure though.

not necessarily. a generation ship would do.

it will have to be the size of an island...
it would need...

Hydroponics to grow food.
enough resources to repair the ship
medical facilities to keep not only the adults healthy but also proper birthing facilities.

communications would be sparse, and once out of the system, practically impossible.

As far as anyone knows there is no way to create a propoltion engine that will take us faster than light. From what I understand, theories regarding FTL travel basically break down into two fields:

1) the "star trek" method. Use some sort of engine to essentially "warp" space, perhaps heavily focused gravity generators. This will bend space in such a way so that the distance we need to travel will be greatly reduced.

2) the "stargate" method. Essentially create a way to engineer stable, macro wormholes to allow transport between them, making galactic transportation a matter of stepping through a doorway.

Alpha-Proxima is 4.22 light-years away. At sub-light speeds that'd take voyager 42,000 years to get there. Go figure.

Still requires you to play with the laws of physics.

Yes and no. Given everything we understand about relativity, method 1 is POSSIBLE, it's just that the energy requirements would be f'ing gigantic, plus you have the problem of bringing space waaaay over there to waaaaay over here. If we buy the particle theory of gravity, they'd still move at light speed, meaning you'd have to wait a long time for the folding effect to take....you know...effect

egads can you imagine if you didn't go to the bathroom before you left "for the last time no we are not pulling over you'll just have to hold it in for the next 100 billion years" >.<

though I hate being proved wrong no its not possible we can't even get to mars without being turned into popcorn people so you would be better off following other star trek ideas like making (nearly) everyone in the universe white

I dunno, I like the idea of an Infinite Improbability Drive. Things are more likely to happen based on how improbable they are, and there's little more improbable than FTL travel.

Once you get a few millions miles past Pluto there's actually a huge fence. The universe doesn't like immigrants, so we're stuck here.
