Snorkeling/Scuba Diving

Postby Buffett and Colbert » Tue Jul 07, 2009 11:03 am

How many of you guys snorkel or scuba dive? I try and go out to snorkel where I live often. It's amazing what you can see in your own backyard! Just in a small beach nearby, I've seen things from lobster to lionfish to eels galore. It's great! So how often does NSG go out and put on a mask and what do you see?

I scuba. My favorite locally is to go out the reef and attract some sharks.

I scuba dive. I'm a certified PADI Open Water Diver. It's been a while though, my last scuba diving trip was about 5 years ago in St. Thomas.

Well, it was 20 years ago and I was 16, but I don't recall it being a particularly difficult course. The concepts, dangers techniques and skills are all pretty straightforward. Probably the most useful skill they teach that doesn't exactly come alive in a decent book is the use of a nitrogen chart for planning dives. Now they have dive computers for divers to rely(over rely?) on.

The most difficult part for me were the open water dives. They were done off of Avery Point in Groton CT in Febuary. Even the wonder of picking up and studying a lobster with my own hand couldn't change the fact that visibility was about 3 feet and the water was cold enough to drive my testicles to snuggle against my kidneys for warmth. :p

Yeah, my instructor was really big on the dive tables. He said a computer was fine, but always make at least a rough estimate of the dive so you know if your computer is batshit insane.

I hear that. I went in a lake back home in April, and it had been a cold winter. When we dipped under the second thermalcline, it was like diving into ice. Fortunately though, the visibility was actually pretty good once we passed through each thermalcline, though.

I've scuba'd (scubad? scubed?) once, in the Med last year. Super cool shit, octopuses and crazy ass fish everywhere. Getting certified is on my to do list.

"went scuba diving"

See, SCUBA is not a word. Therefore, it can have no tense.

I love Scuba Diving/Snorkeling in St.Thomas! Such a wide variety of fish. I found a turtle once. Pretty exciting around that area.

Lots of snokeling but never been scuba diving. Kinda on my to do list but low priority for the moment.
Via snorkeling I've been as deep as 8.3m, but for more practical work 5-6m is probably my limit.

I'd love to get scuba certified, but my problem is saving up the money for the course, mask, snorkel, and fins.

On a somewhat related topic, I already have an 80 C.F. tank (I need to get it inspected, though), but I use that for filling my paintball tanks.

Hmm... I wonder. Maybe I should arrange it so you can scuba by the coral reefs in Fajardo, when you come over. Either that or go to the west and you can scuba in Boquerón. The reefs and marine life there are fucking awesome!

Dorado? Hm... I should consider that option too. The thing is that, one question, is it true the beaches in Dorado are polluted as badly as the ones in Vega Baja?
