Simply using a term is not inherently racist. If a doctor says "black people are more susceptible to diabetes" (I think that's true), then is he a racist for referring to "black" people, even though he's only trying to help people look out for the conditions that they are more vulnerable too? Of course not.

Just Negro.

Not sure if that's racist or not, but I thought it was the proper term.

"Those Negros are enjoying a game of Baseball."

Yeah, that would probably have gotten you hurt in my old neighborhood.

African isn't an ethnicity. American isn't an ethnicity. Ergo African-American isn't an ethnicity.

Wikipedia wrote:An ethnic group is a group of human beings whose members identify with each other, through a common heritage that is real or presumed.[1][2]

Ethnic identity is further marked by the recognition from others of a group's distinctiveness[3] and the recognition of common cultural, linguistic, religious, behavioural or biological traits,[1][4] real or presumed, as indicators of contrast to other groups.[5]

3. Through a common heritage that is real or presumed. CHECK
4. Recognition by others of common biological traits as contrast to others. CHECK

We may not be a ethnic group in the same way that recent immigrants are, but we do fit the definition of an ethnic group.

Not surpised honestly, people get butthurt about such things. Being a Negro can get you hurt in my neck of the woods.

Would calling someone Mexican-American be racist also?
