Poe's Law

Postby UnhealthyTruthseeker » Mon Jul 06, 2009 9:07 pm

This is a weird post and a weird question, but I was reading some amazon.com reviews and this guy came up. I'm pretty sure he's joking, but there's no way to know for sure, what do you guys think?

A little homework for you!

What part of L(f(t)) = Int(exp(-s*t)*f(t),t,0,inf) don't you understand?

The reviewer is almost certainly joking. The book, I'm not so sure, but I wouldn't be surprised. (Poe's Law goes both ways.)

This one is almost certainly a joke:

Stop Insulting Jesus...., December 9, 2008
....by not honoring his birthday.

Liberals sometimes say that's it's OK to say "happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas," because everyone is entitled to worship as they choose. The problem with that argument is that I was raised to accept Christmas as a holiday where EVERYONE celebrates the birth of Jesus, and the air is filled with the sound of carols. Therefore, in order for me to freely practice my religion, you have to practice it, too.

Your refusal to believe what I believe is a violation of my rights. Also, since the founding fathers were Christians, if you don't believe in Jesus you are not entitled to the protections of a US citizen - better start saying "Merry Christmas" and reject the false religion of liberalism. While you're at it, stop teaching children that dinosaurs existed and that Genesis isn't true, since that makes Jesus so angry that he can't celebrate his birthday.

However, there probably really is somewhere out there that stupid. Although, a person dumb enough to believe this probably couldn't figure out how to type out a coherent sentence.

I just read his first review, and it seems nearly certain that the other posts are parody, unless he suddenly changed his personality instantaneously. I wonder, what motivates people to do this? Is it some sort of sick game, or are they trying to make a point? Is it just trolling?

It's never "just" trolling. Done right, it is both outrageous and thought-provoking; it makes the other person realize they may be wrong by showing them an exaggerated version of their position. Done wrong, it just makes the troll look like an idiot. If someone takes the troll seriously, it's also quite funny. Hence, trolling's popularity on the internet since time immemorial. (Since the nineties! When the Internet was steam-powered, of course.)
