American racism was exaggerated and fed by the ruling classes who wanted to distract workers from how they were being screwed.
So in the south, with Jim Crow, they pointed the finger of blame at the blacks.
In the north they blamed 9and still do so today) immigrants, so it was more ethnocentrism than racism.
And out west it was the Chinese.
