Anyway, about curses:
I use both sexual and excretive swearwords, like "cazzo!" (literally d..k, but would better be translated as f..k), "merda!" (shit), "vaffanculo!" (get your a.s s.....d)...
I also use the classical Italian religious-themed profanity (mostly when I'm sure that no Christian is nearby, as he could get quite offended), like "porco dio!" (what a s...e God is), "porca madonna" (what a b...h the virgin Mary is), "porca puttana Eva" (what a filthy b...h Eve was) etc.
As for ethnical slurs, well, I don't use them, generally, with the sole exception for the occasional "terrone!" (derogative for southern Italians).

Should we be more strict in curbing the prevalence of such strong language? How about ethnic or sexual slurs? Is it okay for one group to use such words but not others? Why is damn worse than darn? Or fudge instead of fuck?

I am curious to see your take on the subject. You don't have to answer all or any of the questions above, they're just some of many I have on the subject. Feel free to pose your own, answer broadly on the subject or go into depth if you'd like.

*NOTE: This thread isn't here for you to spam with expletives, please be mature about this and keep it PG-13 as per the forum rules, there is not need to have it closed.*

There was a guy on the radio the other day who had developed a swearing therapy. Basically, whenever something bad happened or he felt down, he would chant "Fuckitfuckitfuckitfuckit..." for a couple of minutes. It made him feel better.
He even had some research (brain scans and the like) showing that it did have a relaxing effect both on him and on other test persons.

I kind of like that, and I can identify with the emotion. I love swearing when given an occasion, it does help. But I wouldn't be one of those people who can't finish a sentence without a bloody or a fuck in it. I use it responsibly. :)
"I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, and as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged on to a half-submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature’s wonders: mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that’s when I first learned about evil. It is built in to the very nature of the universe. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior."

Italian is your native language then? Do you use words from other languages? In my travels I've found the French really enjoy English swears. And I like the French-Canadian "Tabernac" quite alot.

So what I object to isn't cussing, it's GD MF stupid cussing.

That's how E.T. got it's PG rating, if I recall correctly, and for the same reason, so people wouldn't think it was silly kid fluff.

This is a makeover of an old posting on Jolt. My idea about cursing remains: you can use it, but with caution.

Some people have the attitude do use it in almost their lines, they can do it, but I consider them as barbarians.

And I still don't like the hypocrisy around it. This forum is PG13 but it allows cursing. Both can't go along.

PG-13 movies have cursing in them.

Exactly. PG-13 movie here in 2009 would not be a PG-13 movie 15 years ago. Why had our perception changed?

Well, as Finnish is one of the greatest langualges to curse with, it would be a shame not to urse in Finnish.

For those why are intrested in the greatest curses, there's actually a Wiki article on Finnish cursing: Finnish profanity

If a film uses "one of the harsher sexually derived words" (such as fuck) one to four times, it is routine today for the film to receive a PG-13 rating, provided that the word is used as an expletive and not with a sexual meaning

Fuck can be used up to four times. I'll ask you to check your facts. 8)

Not that there's much chance of that.

That could be one factor, indeed.

Also, the prize was beer, and some of those wives looked like they were rather fond of the stuff.

Although the winning wife seemed diminutive and cute.
