Yeah, you gotta personalize the insult. Am I a bitch? Yeah. It doesn't bother me EVERYONE calls me that. It's just background noise now. Someone called me something the other day though that really hurt my feelings.......because it was personal.

Someone called me an irrelevant shallow adolescent misanthropic cur. That hurt a lot because I'm not shallow. :(

But it did make me, when you commented on it...

So you'd consider "shit' wrong am I right? But what makes it wrong? Why does putting those four letters in that order now make a bad word?

Beats me. On a logical level I see nothing wrong with the word "shit" -- I can even write it down. But I have a strong visceral sphincter preventing me from saying it out loud -- and if someone else says it near me, I wince slightly. Pavlov's bell, I guess.

profanity has an honored and honorable place in all languages, well most anyway, as a means of expressing extreme agitation or passion. anyone debasing this by using it as a means of trying to sound cool, to anyone with more then half a brain, doesn't.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

In a gangster movie you expect language like that. It would seem odd not to hear it.

But these days there's a trend to take what is basically a G rated movie for kids, and throw in words like "penis" for no apparent reason other than to get the coveted PG-13 rating.

So what I object to isn't cussing, it's GD MF stupid cussing.

now why does this make me think of a monte python routine. i don't know if they ever actually did, but i can just see them reading some perfecty banal movie review or something and randomly throwing in out of nowhere random names of body parts and other 'naughtyness'.

i will also cut george carlin a bit of slack for partial coolness. i wouldn't say totally but he did have his moments.

When I saw the thread title, I thought it'd be about pirate movies, because they're rated R too, you know.

Maybe people swear because the words are so versatile. Reminds me of that bit from Boondock Saints where Rocco gets into the mobster's hotel room and finds that Connor and Murphy have already killed the mobsters.

ROCCO: What did you do?! Fuckin'... what the fuckin' fuck! Who the fuck, fucked this fuckin'? fuck. How did you two fuckin', fucks?......... FUCK!!!

CONNOR: Certainly illustrates the diversity of the word.

One of my favorite movies. I'm still waiting for the sequel.

It's been on-again off-again so long. I heard that it's all shot and post-production, now, though - and is expected to debut this November. If you go to the official Boondock store, Troy was actually selling bullet-casings from the set of All Saint's Day - so I think it's pretty certain it's real.

Profanity is a great way to express yourself. While it doesn't particularly show the eloquence with which one can speak. As George S. Patton Jr. would say. " Give it to them down and dirty, and it'll stick." I find that saying " you have no idea what your doing" sends a relatively simple message to someone that they aren't exactly skilled in their particular endeavor. While saying " you're a fucking idiot" works a bit better. In the fact that it steps on someone's toes. Given that example one would find it prudent to motivate persons who are otherwise unmotivated by kindness. The biggest reason that i can see for profanity being what it is today, is that we all live in this " Politically Correct" bubble.

I swear a lot. I've toned it down a little as since I graduated and entered the professional world, but I still swear quite a lot. I don't swear at work. Ever. Because I work with small children. It isn't difficult; I have automatic sensors in place. The only time I've come close to cursing in front of the kids was when I caught one of my high heels on the carpet and rolled my ankle. :/

I don't use racial slurs, but I didn't grow up with them--they're not what come to mind even when I'm pissed off. I will occasionally use the word "fag", but only around people who know I am half gay and aren't offended by it. Unless I absolutely have to, like if I'm quoting something verbatim, I never, ever use the words c***, n***** or k***. They make my stomach hurt.

Q)what are your opinions of it NSG?
A)It's a movie I haven't seen, I couldn't judge, looks ok though, probably would have scarred me when I was 12.
Q)Are such words needed in today's world?
A)Nothing is needed in todays world, swearing is a good vent for letting out ones feelings on a subject, there are other ways of speaking and they may be eloquent, but either not always as fun or the refuge of a simpleton or a verbal sloth.
Q)Are the social taboos against them old and failing?
A)Yes and No, probably more people don't give a damn(opps) if they are said or not, some of the older bad words can be said without anyone blinking an eye, nor reckognising them as swears, Bloody, Nigger and Damn for example.
Q)Have we become so accustomed to many such words that we no longer consider them inappropriate?
A)Yes, some people have, but also some people recognise this and do so anyways.
Q)Should we be more strict in curbing the prevalence of such strong language?
A)It wouldn't hurt to do so, but it might infringe on peoples Human Rights, we couldn't have that now could we?
Also, the gross majority of movies these days are subject to discussions on sex, sex, drugs, violence or swearing to make them humorous and/or entertaining, Superbad, Pineapple Express, I love you, Man or Transformers, Rise of the Fallen need these things to make them entertaining.
Q)How about ethnic or sexual slurs?
A)If anything they should be used more often, they were there for a reason.
Q)Is it okay for one group to use such words but not others?
A)Blacks shouldn't be allowed to say Nigger to each other if Whitey cannot, Hispanics or Chinese also, they shouldn't call each other nigger either.
Q)Why is damn worse than darn?
A)It isn't, except for American FCC policy makers(Any and all, plus those outside that agency) being morons, the idea of saying fudge is ok but fuck isn't, or banning shit or poos but not feces is stupid!
Q)Or fudge instead of fuck?
A)See above.

I don't really like using or hearing swear words...fuck is the worst its really over used. I really dislike people who use it in every sentence makes them seem stupid anyways. I only use them when extremely angry.

I usually only use profanities to add dramatic effect to my speech or when someone REALLY pisses me off. I don't mind swearing it just gets kinda annoying (and amusing) when you hear 'cool' people use the f word 5 times in a 10 word long sentence.

Oddly, I rarely ever swear in real life.

I just don't see the fucking point most of the time.
Venicilian: wow. Jesus hung around with everyone. boys, girls, rich, poor(mostly), sick, healthy, etc. in fact, i bet he even went up to gay people and tried to heal them so they would be straight.
The Parkus Empire: Being serious on NSG is like wearing a suit to a nude beach.
New Kereptica: Since power is changed energy over time, an increase in power would mean, in this case, an increase in energy. As energy is equivalent to mass and the density of the government is static, the volume of the government must increase.
